The United States has dominated the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Nonetheless, sprinting icons, Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson have been the frontrunners in the medals tally. Both the prodigies trounced the Jamaican teams in style and took home multiple victories. However, it was not just America’s triumph that won the hearts of their compatriots, but their unique celebration on the tracks of Budapest also took all the brownie points.

The U.S. women’s track team won gold in the 4x100m relay in a championship record time of 41.03 seconds. However, it was the celebration at the end of the race that captured everyone’s attention.

As Richardson was about to cross the finish line to clinch gold, the men’s team waited with bated breaths and looked on. Richardson crossed the line while being in full throttle as men’s winner Christian Coleman went to celebrate with her. But instead of a normal hug or a high five, they were involved in a heartfelt and sudden football tackle celebration that saw Richardson harmlessly fly to the ground. She quickly sprung back to her feet with an undaunted smile. According to an ESPN report, Coleman said, “I didn’t know she was going to jump like that. I guess I was supposed to catch her. But I don’t know. It’s all good.”

Richardson was the last runner in the 4x100m women’s relay, as he took the baton from the silver medalist in the 200 meters, Gabby Thomas. A two-step lead allowed Richardson once more to outrace Shericka Jackson, the Jamaican 200-meter gold medalist. The clock stopped at 41.03 seconds, granting the U.S. women a triumphant edge of 0.18 seconds over Jamaica, with Britain securing the third position. Earlier, the U.S. men’s 4x100m relay team had also secured their gold in style.

The U.S. men’s 4×100 relay team won gold

The U.S. men’s 4x100m relay team comprised Christian Coleman, Fred Kerley, Brandon Carnes, and Noah Lyles. They ran a spectacular relay in 37.38 seconds. Tokyo gold medalist Italy came second with 37.62 while Jamaica secured bronze with a time of 37.76. This win came as a relief for the U.S. men’s 4x100m relay team who had not won an Olympic gold in the discipline since 2000. Their track record at the world championships was also not great since they had only won 1 gold medal in the past 7 world championships.
