The World Anti-Doping Agency is embroiled in a new controversy surrounding a recent revelation about its Spanish counterpart. As it happens, CELAD, also known as the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency, has turned a blind eye to athletes using performance-enhancing drugs. This shocking unmasking came at the hands of the Madrid-based sports website Relevo. In the wake of the CELAD controversy, fairness and transparency in track and field have been called into question.

Relevo found many instances between 2017 and 2022 when athletes tested positive for controlled substances but received no punishment. Now, the Athletics Integrity Unit has taken matters into its own hands. But will this move be enough to restore the athletic community’s faith in the sanctity of future races? Let’s find out.

The Marathon organizers recently unfurled an “Official Statement” on their X page. The post featured a snap proclaiming the two events, namely, the 21K Valencia Trinidad Alfonso Zurich and the 42K Valencia Trinidad Alfonso. However, since the controversy, the athletic community and the fans alike have begun contesting the integrity of these races. When the athletic community was still engrossed in doubts about the future of track and field, the AIU quietly set a few precedents in motion. Firstly, it substituted the CELAD as the drug-testing authority in the Valencia Marathon. However, the bigger revelation came on the official Twitter page of a sports journalist.

Jonathan Gault, a staff writer for Letsrundotcom attracted the fans’ attention to a major shift with an X post that read, “In the wake of revelations that the Spanish anti-doping agency CELAD was hiding/not pursuing positive tests, the Valencia Marathon will be entrusting its pre/post-race drug testing to teams from the Athletics Integrity Unit”. But, until the time the CELAD is cleared of all wrongdoings at the judicial level, this sense of wrongdoing will continue to spread in the track and field community.

The Valencia Marathon General Director, Juan Manuel Botella in an official statement said, “Although the cases that have appeared in the media are not related to the controls of the Valencia Half or Marathon, there is a loss of confidence in the highest Spanish anti-doping body, in the that until now we had trusted, and in the companies authorized by it to carry out the tests”.
