Hunter Woodhall went back to where it all started. The 25-year-old had one of the best outings in the French capital this year. Winning an Olympic medal, Hunter fulfilled his dreams of making his country proud. But all these dreams would not have been possible if Hunter had not come to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Being a child without legs, dreaming about winning a gold medal seemed impossible. Hunter was born with a rare deformity that had his right ankle fused. The condition named fibular hemimelia had his left leg severely affected.
Unfortunately, right when he was 11 months old, Hunter had to amputate both his legs. Fortunately, for him, the Hospital at Salt Lake City provided Hunter with running legs. This was such a life changing moment for Hunter that before going to Paris, he made a promise to come back to the hospital to pay his respect.
Hunter stated, “This gold is as much mine as yours… That’s one of the first things Tara (Davis-Woodhall) and I planned, going back to Salt Lake City Hospital, seeing all you guys and now we are bringing back two gold medals baby.” And after so many years, when Hunter came back as a champion, his words thrilled the other children whose eyes were lit with dreams.
