Is Letsile Tebogo the new king of track, or does Fred Kerley still reign supreme?

Making a splash on the tracks has become the norm for Letsile Tebogo. The track and field world can’t help but notice whenever the 21-year-old is competing in a meet. He first silenced the doubts by claiming a silver in the 100m at the World Championships. However, since then, the sprinter refuses to stop. With his magnificent win of 19.46 seconds at the French capital, the Botswanan has shifted his focus to the Diamond League meet.

While the wunderkind has never claimed the title of a champion at the DL yet, he hints at how there’s nothing better than the present. During the press conference, he was asked what it would be like to win the title. “I mean, for me, it will be one of the greatest season if at all we get the trophy.” The 21-year-old currently has 32 points in the 200m and 14 points in the 100m. With the finals inching closer on Saturday, the Olympian is eager to make it to the top of the table.

Letsile Tebogo calmly stated, “But I mean, it’s a good thing to end the season with that winning streak of gold medal in Diamond League finalist winning that trophy.” After his historic win at the Paris Summer Games, the Olympian has consistently dominated the tracks throughout DL. While he primarily focused on the 200m event, he did wet his feet in the 100m event too. Hoping to draw the curtains on an incredible season, it wouldn’t hurt to end it with a bang.

The 21-year-old confessed, “So, it means a lot to me.” Ever since he began contesting in the DL meets after the Olympics, there hasn’t been a race he hasn’t won, whether it’s 100m or 200m. He will face Erriyon Knighton, Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek, and more in the finals on Saturday. However, in the 200m DL standings, the Olympian is in second place. Dominican Republic’s Alexander Ogando currently holds the top spot with 35 points on the table.

How do the points work? According to the Wanda Diamond League rules, each athlete ranking 1st to 8th will receive between 8 and 1 point at each of the series meets. However, only the top 6 qualify for the final at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels. Whoever comes out on top will receive a hefty cash prize and the Dimond Trophy. Leading up to the finals, he opens up on what fans can expect from him in Brussels.
