Kenny Bednarek's anime love and headband—Is this the new face of American track and field?

“I am tired of being Mr. Silver,” Kenny Bednarek declared in an interview with Capital FM of Kenya, as he geared up for the 2023 season. He may not flaunt the flamboyance or swagger typical of world-class sprinters, but his recent track performances speak volumes. The 25-year-old sprinter from Wisconsin, who won silver in the 200 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, is now setting his sights higher. Qualified for the men’s 100-meter and 200-meter events at the State College meet in late June, Bednarek is set to return for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

While he may not be the top favorite, he’s definitely among the athletes expected to contend for medals. “This year I am coming with a different mentality…the goal is to double (in the 100m and 200m),” Bednarek says, reflecting his renewed focus. This month, he played a crucial role in Team USA’s victory at the World Athletics Relay Championships and won the 200m at the Prefontaine Classic. With a fresh mindset and his signature headbands, Bednarek continues to captivate fans and make a statement both on and off the track.

His dog, Rambo, is yet another link to the primary thing he is known for wearing headbands, a look that owes much to the Sylvester Stallone character of the same name. Recently, after the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya, humorously a Blogger channel, named Track Spice posted on X on Bednarek’s headbands, which he reshared. He captioned it, funnily, “👀 Getting all my headbands custom designed this year. Will be doing a giveaway of the Kenya headband soon. The “Kung Fu Kenny” snatched the spotlight at the Paris Olympics as well. However, the main dominance started from the Olympic trials where he had two personal best times. In Bednarek’s 200m specialty, he ran at 19:59, breaking his personal best. Then, in the 100m final, fans witnessed his speed once again and he finished off in 9.87 seconds. Even after that, he did not get that much attention for his excellence, still, he told the Team USA in an interview, “It doesn’t matter if I’m getting all the love; I’m going to be there all the time, putting my foot on the gas,” expressing his deepest desire to compete stronger, no matter what it takes.
