Amidst the grand finale of the esteemed Millrose Games, where records were both made and broken, the conclusion of the event brought with it a somber tone. The somber tone permeated the entire track and field community. The most recent blow struck with unparalleled sadness as Kenya’s beloved marathon world record holder, Kelvin Kiptum, tragically lost his life in a devastating traffic accident.

Just 24 years old, Kelvin Kiptum, along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana, passed away in a road accident outside Eldoret, a town nestled in Kenya’s Rift Valley. The death of such a promising talent has left an immense darkness in the entire track and field world. Nevertheless, during this period of mourning, his memory remains vivid to us, especially his outstanding performance in the 2023 season.

Record-breaking feats

Kelvin Kiptum shattered the world record at the Chicago Marathon, completing the grueling course at 2:00:35, setting a new mark, overtaking the previous record set by Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin the preceding year. Kiptum, in his third marathon outing, showcased remarkable prowess. Mirroring his earlier performances, he exhibited strategic mastery. He accelerated in the latter half of the race, clocking 1:00:48 for the initial segment. His astonishing timing for the latter phase was 59:47.

From the outset of his career, the world record appeared within Kiptum’s grasp. His debut marathon victory in Valencia in December 2022 was significant. He achieved a timing of 2:01:53, placing him as the fifth fastest in history at the time. Building on this success, he triumphed in London four months later. His remarkable timing of 2:01:25 was second only to his compatriot Kipchoge. However, this young talent died as he lost control while driving.

Kelvin Kiptum lost control of his vehicle on Sunday evening. The result was a fatal accident that claimed his life and that of his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana. Sadly, this promising young talent, known for his remarkable achievements in marathons, was poised to make history.
