After the final 100-meter dash in the U.S. Olympic Trials, Noah Lyles clocked 9.83 and grabbed the throne of being the fastest man this season. But his reign as the ‘fastest’ was short-lived as the Jamaican athletes broke his record twice. Kishane Thompson timed 9.77 becoming the world’s fastest.

Hot on Thompson’s heels were Oblique Seville and Ackeem Blake, who finished with impressive times of 9.82 and 9.92 seconds, respectively. Seville repeated his 9.82-second feat for the second time this season. Having bested reigning world champion Noah Lyles in the Racers Grand Prix earlier, the timing of his in the Jamaican trials further strengthened the threat that his time might pose for Lyles.

Oblique Seville is tying his shoes to fight for international glory against his formidable competitors under the mentorship of Glen Mills. Mills has already molded the Jamaican legend, Usain Bolt to innumerable victories. With a modest tailwind of 0.9 meters per second, Kishane Thompson is now the fastest after America’s Fred Kerley who timed 9.76 in June 2022.

Jamaica and America’s track rivalry extends way beyond Lyles and Seville. Usain Bolt is the name that is now a synonym for speed across the globe. Although he was indomitable on track, he faced strong competition from America’s Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin. This same rivalry is also noticed in the women’s track and field arena. Sha’Carri Richardson is ready to grab the ticket for Paris after the US Olympic Trials clocking 10.71 seconds. However, her Jamaican rivals, Tia Clayton, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, and Shericka Jackson have timed 10.90, 10.94, and 10.84 respectively posing a threat to Richardson’s Olympic dream.

With Kishane Thompson’s record-breaking run and Seville’s consistent excellence, Jamaica is poised to challenge the dominance of the U.S. on the global sprinting stage once more. But fans would wait to witness if America manages to shine brighter, dimming the light of the Jamaican track athletes.
