Home/Olympics

The 2024 season of track and field is up and running, with major events remaining to hit the spotlight. With the Paris Olympics approaching in a few months, the event will witness the emergence of fresh athletic talent set to shine on the global stage. The crowned athletes would not only bring glory to their nations, but they would also inspire the upcoming athletes aspiring to compete at the highest level. However, the desirable young athletes are facing hindrances such as strict rules barring them from competing in the events.

Along similar lines, Mississippi has garnered scrutiny from fans as they banned a young and talented track and field prodigy from participating after he failed to adhere to their guidelines.

On Saturday, Kyle Merber, the former American middle distance runner, took it to his X handle and shared a post about a runner named Andrew Brown, who has been banned by Mississippi for competing independently. He wrote, “Mississippi banned a freshman for the rest of the year for competing unattached at the high school national meet because the state’s outdoor season already started. Are you kidding? What a backwards and insane rule. Let Andrew Brown run!”

Reportedly, Brown is the fastest 1600-meter freshman in the United States, and he is now forbidden to participate in any outdoor track and field competition for the remainder of the year. An alumnus of Tupelo High School in northern Mississippi, Brown, is facing the consequences of his participation in the 2024 New Balance Indoor Nationals. However, the winner of one-mile and 3000-meter mid-school events is receiving unwavering support from the fans, as track and field enthusiasts are questioning the state’s decision.

Track and Field fans come in support of the youngster

The athlete who has reportedly breached the MHSAA rule of participating indoors while being unattached has been heartbroken and has amassed steadfast backing from fans. A fan raised his concern for him and also suggested similar situations occurring in the other states as well, writing, “You don’t know how bad @CIFSS was to Newbury Park. That’s why Lex and Leo gave up their senior year.”

While another fan expressed his frustration over strict rules and avoiding the well-being of kids, he wrote, “It feels like running has the worst adults enforcing rules for the kids. Just let them run. You don’t win by banning another kid, and if someone want to run a race, its honestly none of your business.”

One other fan questioned the rationale behind the rule and stated “Why is this even a rule?”

“That’s really too bad. I hope the people who have the ‘power’ come to their senses and change course for this boy,” a fan expressed his sympathy to the runner while hoping the authorities would reconsider their decision.
