In a recent episode on the popular YouTube channel “CITIUS MAG,” boasting 34.6k subscribers, founder and podcast host Christopher Chavez engaged in a compelling interview with Clayton Young. During the interview, the focus shifted to a critical moment in Young’s recent race Olympic Marathon Trials. Chavez delved into the controversy, referencing social media’s buzzing conspiracy theories regarding why Young allowed Conner Mantz to pass him near the finish line. Young confessed that he had envisioned celebrating his victory by grabbing an American flag, inspired by Meb’s iconic moments. Despite the tactical disadvantage, Young prioritized team camaraderie and the collective goal of securing a spot in the Paris event. Reflecting on the tactical decision to let the lead go earlier in the race, Young shared his exact words, “When we broke away with two miles to go and Conner said, ‘Take the lead,’ obviously that’s not my best tactical move to win. And I had to ask myself, ‘Do I wanna make this team with Conner? Do I want to help Conner and ultimately enjoy this?'”

It is way more valuable to have him in Paris than for me to play this tactical move with Conner. And ultimately, that’s what I did.'” In the end, Clayton Young’s unconventional move not only stirred controversy but also provided a glimpse into the complex decision-making process of elite athletes.
