Boston Marathon 2024 distance to be covered

The Boston Marathon 2024 is a historic 26-mile, 385-yard race that has been a hallmark of the event since its inception in 1897. Participants from over 120 countries and all 50 U.S. states will run in support of various charitable causes. This year, the Marathon is expecting 30,000 runners, contributing more than $200 million to the Greater Boston Economy.

You can watch the Marathon in person or via live streams including WMUR, WCVB, WPTZ, and WMTW. Long-distance running serves as more than just a physical challenge; it symbolizes the resilience, determination, and human spirit of individuals. The Marathon route covers a distance of 42.195 km and includes different routes like Route 16, Route 165, Route 30, and many more. 

The route of the Boston Marathon 2024 will wind through various charming cities and towns in Massachusetts, including Framingham, Ashland, Wellesley, Natick, Brookline, and Newton. In contrast to the Marathon’s flatter terrain, the Boston Marathon is characterized by its challenging hills.

While the “Heartbreak Hill” is the most challenging part of the race, between miles 20 and 21 in Newton, runners always prepare themselves for the other hills. Many marathon runners call the experience a “hitting the wall”. However, the Boston Marathon has revealed its final schedule which must be followed by the audience.

Complete schedule of the historic race

The Boston Marathon 2024 features a comprehensive schedule of the events surrounding the main race. The starting time is 9 a.m. and the Marathon will officially end at 5.30 p.m. This year’s schedule for the Boston Marathon has changed from previous years. The tentative starting times of the races are:

  •   9:02 a.m. ET – Wheelchair Division – Men
  •   9:05 a.m. ET – Wheelchair Division – Women
  •   9:30 a.m. ET – Handcycle & Duo Participants
  •   9:37 a.m. ET – Professional Men
  •   9:47 a.m. ET – Professional Women
  •   9:50 a.m. ET – Para Athletics Divisions
  •   10:00 a.m. ET – Wave 1
  •   10:25 a.m. ET – Wave 2
  •   10:50 a.m. ET – Wave 3
  •   11:15 a.m. ET – Wave 4

But, please note that the schedule can be changed at the last-minute. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) typically describes their timings as ‘tentative’ to accommodate any adjustments needed. Post-marathon, Boylston Street reopens to traffic by 8 p.m., with other streets following suit by 7 p.m., ensuring a smooth and memorable experience for all involved.
