Can Oblique Seville surpass Usain Bolt's legacy, or is Bolt's record untouchable?

Oblique Seville has been emerging as the new face of Jamaican track and field. Having a knack for running right from childhood, Seville’s skills blossomed early on. Competing in the U20 Carifta Games, Seville won double gold medals in the 100m and the 4x100m relay. He also won a couple of U20 Pan American Championship silver medals before rising like a phoenix to the main mix of things.

Having clinched the fourth position in both the 2022 and the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Seville soon became a threat to his peers. With his timing improving significantly with each race, Seville is now touted as a probable frontrunner to break Usain Bolt’s world record timings. Unfortunately, coming to Paris with high hopes, he did not get the desired results in the Olympics. The 23-year-old got overshadowed by the likes of Noah Lyles and Kishane Thompson, as the men’s 100m race turned out to be one of the fastest in the Olympics’ history.

But Seville isn’t losing hope. He believes in grinding hard until things go right for him. After all, the Jamaican has some solid motivation to keep going and pushing for the ultimate track and field glory. Well, it is none other than his father, Gerald Seville. According to the sprinter, his father was his biggest support system right from childhood. He had high hopes for his son and wanted to see Oblique reach new heights in track and field.

Unfortunately, things came to a standstill when Oblique came to know that his father was no more in 2018. Opening up on the somber chapter of his life on ‘Sprint’ season 2, the Olympian stated, “In 2018 the 7th of December he was riding his bike. Everyone saw him and by the next morning got the message that he passed away. It was a heart attack. Before he died, he said to me that you can do great things.” The 23-year-old further stated that it is his dad’s memories that push him to go out and take on the world.

Revealing his motivation behind competing in the Paris Olympics, Oblique reflected, “It takes only you, only you alone, to get the job done. That’s the motivation because each time I’m performing I am always thinking I’m going to go there and do this for him… If I do this, I know my dad is going to be happy… He will be there smiling.”

Oblique Seville is definitely on the right track. In August 2024, at the Paris Olympics, he clocked a personal best of 9.81 seconds in the 100m, further improving his record. With that time, the Jamaican sprinter is eyeing Usain Bolt’s legendary record and feels more confident than ever in his chances of breaking it. Speaking of Bolt, Oblique has a close bond with the Bolt family, and his exceptional talent has now earned him another major honor from them.

Have an interesting take?

Back in June 2024, Oblique Seville stunned the entire world at the Racer’s Grand Prix in Kingston. Running against the hot favorite Noah Lyles, Oblique Seville took the victory emphatically. Beating Lyles’ timing, Seville notched up a blitzkrieg timing of 9.82s to make the track and field get up and take some serious notes. With this, he beat his own previous personal best of 9.86 and took the world lead of 2024 at the time. However, there was one more thing that caught fans’ attention. During the end of the race, Seville turned towards Lyles and gave him a stare. This was typical of Usain Bolt when he used to do the same to his opponents.

Impressed by the triumph, waves of congratulatory messages flooded Oblique instantly. But one among them particularly stood out. After all, it came from Usain Bolt’s mother, Jennifer Bolt. While Jennifer embraced the champion in a tight hug, an X post from Track Spice stated, “Usain Bolt’s mother Jennifer Bolt came to congratulate her ‘second son’ Oblique Seville on his great performance.” This was surely a huge achievement for Oblique. Thus, with his father’s memory in mind, it will be interesting to see what new heights the track and field star conquers in the future.
