The race to the top is never completely over. Even a month after the conclusion of the Paris Olympics, fans are still reeling from the high-octane action that set the Stade de France on fire. The 2024 Diamond League is also over, but this is by no means the end of the action for the year, as Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian promises. Partnering with 3x Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas, Serena Williams’ husband is looking to transform the world of track and field altogether.
Ohanian has been a staunch advocate of promoting women’s sports and uses all available resources to empower more female athletes. A major investor in Angel City FC, Ohanian believes “the women deserve this,” and Harvard grad Thomas is here to help. September will mark the kickoff of Ohanian’s ambitious project Athlos NYC 2024 which aims to give female track and field stars an exclusive stage to show their mettle. But what is all the fuss about? Let’s get to the details!

The Athlos NYC is expected to have a stacked roster of stars who will go head-to-head with each other in the Icahn Stadium at 10 Central Rd, New York, NY 10035. On September 26, the country will bear witness to some of the most enigmatic track stars from all four corners of the globe in a bid to bag fat cheques along with victories in their respective events. The upcoming inaugural edition of the tournament will hand over a prize money of $60,000 to the gold medalists. Naturally, the amount has caught the attention of a long line of athletes who want a piece of the action.
In April this year, Ohanian and Thomas announced their dream project called 776 Invitational, which later came to be known as the Athlos NYC 2024. But the neurobiologist isn’t the only scintillating name on the list of competitors. Along with Gabby, British track star and IMG model Annie Tagoe was also announced as one of the sprinters who would compete in Ohanian’s tournament, and fans were elated claiming Tagoe would make the event all the more glamorous. But the excitement doesn’t end there!
Olympic gold medalist Faith Kipyegon of Kenya and the Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino will also be part of the thrilling ride ahead. Alexis Holmes and Masai Russell, two more homegrown talents, will aim to set the bar high at the Athlos events, hoping to maintain their winning momentum after the Paris Games. Holmes recently earned additional honors at the Diamond League season finale in Brussels and will be poised to recreate her success in NYC next Thursday in the 400m sprint. Additionally, there are speculations about Sha’Carri Richardson possibly making a surprise appearance, which are buzzing across the track community.

Ohanian aims to radicalize women’s track sports all over the world and the Athlos tournament will be the first step toward fulfilling the objective. The event will pay medalists significantly more than what the Diamond League offers. Thomas also noted her excitement to be a part of the journey saying, “I am excited to partner with forward-thinking organizations like 776 that share our vision for advancing women’s track,” while Ohanian said, “By investing in women’s track, we aim to elevate the profile of female athletes and create a more inclusive and equitable sporting landscape.”
