Juantorena’s record still stands tall, as no one has challenged this record yet. In his recent Tweet, the renowned sprinter Michael Johnson expressed his admiration for Juantorena as his “personal hero.” Johnson wrote, “One of the greatest track athletes ever and a personal hero of mine. 400/800 double is unbelievable!”
In the 1976 Olympics, Juantorena ran not only the 400 meters but also the 800m, winning gold in both. His victory in the 800 meters came with a world record time of 1:43.50. Post this, the incredible achievement followed when Juantorena won the 400m race in an astonishingly low-altitude world record time of 44.26 seconds, only three days later. These victories brought about double glory for him and ultimately, he received the status of an Olympic legend over time.
