Did Christian Miller make the right call by choosing a brand deal over NCAA eligibility?

My story has just begun—  Christian Miller’s Paris Olympics heartbreak may have felt like a setback, but the 18-year-old promptly put that behind him. 9.98 seconds on the board for a fifth finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials and he still did not make it to the 4x100m relay pool! But, the track and field prodigy knew— that was barely the end of the road for him.

Weeks after sharing the track with America’s top sprinters, Miller still appeared confident about staging a strong comeback. And that reflected as he switched gears, from collegiate athletics to going pro. And now he backs that decision with another major announcement! One step after another, the teenager is making his intentions to join the cream at the top crystal clear.

As per the latest update, Christian Miller has now decided to partner with Oakley Eyewear, a California-based brand. With the news of his signing announced through social media, the brand labeled Miller— ‘The future of fast,’ as he posed donning their trendy shades in an Instagram post. They also hailed him for ‘breaking barriers and setting records’ while praising his onboarding with the side.

On the other hand, while Miller further added that he’s excited and blessed to have become a part of the Oakley family, he gave a well-deserved shoutout to the brand. Pointing out what about them resonates with his vision, Miller wrote, “Their dedication to produce the best eyewear on the planet lines up with my desired work to be the best athlete in the world.” Truly so, as touching the $1.1 billion net sales mark in 2010, the brand is among the names that have been topping the sales charts ever since.

Have an interesting take?

You ask, what is so special about Christian Miller joining hands with Oakley? Well, the latter has concretized its name as a reputed runner’s brand. Since 2023, when they launched their earliest batch of eyewear customized for sprinters— featuring Prizm lenses as well as Unobtanium nose pads, they had to get the seal of being the innovators in this domain. Till as recent as the Paris Olympics, the brand’s Vice President and Head of Global Sports Marketing declared, “We’re going to have about 2,000 to 5,000 athletes that will be wearing our products.”

While Miller’s collaboration with them is a major feat, it isn’t the first of its kind. Back in 2023, the brand welcomed Fred Kerley under their banner, who brought his speed and sophistication into the partnership. Even way before that, at the Tokyo Olympics, Canadian sprinter Andre de Grasse had turned heads for he wore his Oakley Xeus sunglasses to every race. And now, it’s Christian Miller who takes the torch forward, backing his massive call from July 2024.

Taking his experience from the 2024 Olympic trials as a lesson, Miller soon decided to go all out. Not once did he display a dip in morale, in fact, he knew this was the beginning of something truly momentous for him. While remaining grateful for the host of opportunities that opened up for him in the recent past, he soon turned the page and decided it was time to go pro.

Christian Miller announced, “After weeks of consultation with my family, mentors, and coaches, I have decided to forgo my NCAA eligibility and pursue a professional career as a full-time track and field athlete.” While he thanked Georgia for everything the side has added to his career, he confirmed— I will always remain a Bulldog at heart. And now he backs that bold career move with another decision. Is the athlete, ranked as a promising track and field prospect in America by MileSplit, looking to power to LA 2028 in all his glory?
