Junelle Bromfield is going through a rough patch in her life. The athlete’s campaign for the Paris Olympics didn’t go as planned, leaving her empty-handed in both events she competed in. But it’s the turmoil off the track that’s been even more distressing, as she and her family have received death threats stemming from her relationship with Noah Lyles. This whole hate campaign stems from comments made by the American athlete getting blown out of proportion.
Noah Lyles had gone on to Colin Waitzman’s Track World News, where he shared some intriguing insights about his relationship with Junelle. The Olympic gold medalist claimed he was aware of all the “drama” within the Jamaican camp because his girlfriend had confided in him about it. This revelation made the Jamaican fanbase go berserk as they accused her of being a “traitor” resulting in a wave of hate, backlash, and even death threats. Now, months later, Junelle has chosen to respond to her critics.
Appearing in the Sim Soul Sessions, Junelle Bromfield was asked whether she would ask forgiveness from her trolls. The 2021 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bromfield replied, saying that she had nothing to apologize for as she hadn’t done anything. She then went on to say that the people asking her to seek forgiveness were the ones who brought her parents into the conversation.

Junelle Bromfield said, “Honestly, I would say I’m not looking for forgiveness, especially from the people who came in my DM, talking about my family, talking about my mom. Those are the people asking for forgiveness, and I’m like, How are you going to forgive somebody who did not do anything?” The seriousness of the death threats has forced Junelle to stop visiting Jamaica altogether.
When the host of Sim Soul Sessions, Simone Clarke, first asked her to appear on her show, Junelle Bromfield refused. This is because she was afraid to go back to her country amidst the ongoing ordeal. However, Simone took it upon herself to fly to Orlando for the interview, providing the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist with an opportunity to share her story.

During the same interview, Junelle Bromfield opened up about the challenging circumstances of her upbringing in a poor community known as George’s Valley. As a child, she thought that becoming a teacher was the highest aspiration one could achieve. Despite this, she was largely unaware of the true extent of her family’s poverty. She said, “So growing up, I would say my mom did a pretty amazing job of not letting us know that we were poor because we all never went to bed hungry or anything.”

Junelle recalled a specific instance from her childhood when her mother, short on money, would feed her and her sisters oatmeal. “It tasted so good because she used to put in like nutmeg and everything, and it was good.” However, the oatmeal often turned out runny, which made young Junelle believe that was the proper way to make it. That belief lasted until she was eight, when someone served her thick oatmeal, making her realize how it was actually supposed to be made.
This moment was a turning point for Junelle Bromfield, as she began to understand the reality of her situation and took more control of her life to change her future. Today, she has made a name for herself in the world of track and field as an Olympian, staying true to her goals. Tragically, she lost her mother to cervical cancer in 2021, a loss that has been incredibly difficult for her to cope with. Yet, despite the numerous hardships she has faced, the Jamaican athlete has never given up and has shown remarkable fortitude, just as she is now in this tough situation.
