Is Daniel Do Nascimento's doping suspension a fair punishment or a career-ending overreaction?

As the Paris Olympics are just a week away, the number of suspensions because of doping is increasing. This time, the accusation has found someone who has the South American record in the marathon. As per the update by news outlets, the Brazilian middle- and long-distance runner, Daniel do Nascimento, has come under scanner after testing positive for consuming three banned substances, which are often touted as performance-enhancing drugs. In its latest report, the Brazilian Doping Control Authority commented on the fact that it had carried out an out-of-game test on July 4, and surprisingly, the athlete was found guilty in that test.

Now, Daniel will have to face penalties. That will definitely push him out of contention for the Paris Olympics. Notably, he is currently in Kenya for his preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics. All he was up to was improving his timing (2:07.06), which ultimately qualified him for the Paris Olympics. But now, everything could be at a standstill for him, as the penalty will keep him out of the race.

However, something concrete has yet to come on the weight of the penalty, as most of the thoughts have remained toward the 4-year ban order. Nonetheless, that ban order would restrict Daniel do Nascimento from participating in the LA 2028 Olympics as well. But a shorter duration might follow if the 25-year-old accepts his blunders, resulting in violating the three anti-doping rules.

Noteworthy, his Kenyan girlfriend, Graziele Zarri, also faced the wrath after being found positive in the doping test in the first quarter of this year. The concerned Kenyan Anti-Doping Agency traced two performance-enhancing drugs in her sample. So the case has taken some vicious turns from that perspective. Yet the fans will be missing all the heroics Daniel do Nascimento has given on the courts.

Till now, hardly anyone can match Eliud Kipchoge’s pace at the marathon. However, Daniel Do Nascimento matched that and even fist-bumped with the legend in the middle of the race. So the expectation was that he would end up alongside Eliud Kipchoge on the podium in the Tokyo Olympics. But to everyone’s disbelief, do Nascimento could not finish the race. A similar incident happened next year in the TCS NYC Marathon.

This time, he again turned the air toward himself and remained the front-runner. His pace was so charismatic that it left him in the first position, even in front of the lead vehicle. Up to the 30-kilometer distance in the marathon, Daniel do Nascimento maintained a two-minute lead over the chasing pack. The pack included names like Evans Chebet. But again, Daniel’s fate smiled, and he took a porta-potty break. Later, after a few minutes, he collapsed on the route and couldn’t consolidate the lead, leaving the place to Evans. This year as well, Daniel do Nascimento could not finish the TCS London Marathon, though a lot of stakes remained on his side. Now, his colorful presence will be missed on the track for a while.
