Florence Griffith-Joyner’s world records have stood strong for 35 long years. The women’s 100m and 200m world records set by Flo Jo are one of the longest-standing world records in sporting history. Flo-Jo recorded both world records in 1988 when she ran 10.49 seconds in the 100m and 21.34 seconds in the 200m. Although these records still stand, a few have come close to achieving this impressive feat, and Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson is one of them.

Before the Prefontaine Classic 2023, Jackson had stated her desire to break Flo-Jo’s 35-year-old world record in Eugene. However, despite her track win in Eugene, Shericka Jackson still fell short of achieving world record glory.

Shericka Jackson dominated the women’s 100m division at the 2023 Prefontaine Classic. She became the 2023 women’s 100m Diamond League champion by clocking 10.70 seconds. Marie Josée Ta Lou came second with her season-best time of 10.75 seconds while Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah finished third with her season-best time of 10.79 seconds.

However, despite her dominant win, Jackson is still on the lookout for the Flo-Jo’s world record. She will be aiming for it once again tomorrow in the women’s 200m division and has also announced that if she fails to achieve the world record this year, she will try for it once again in the 2024 Paris Olympics. With a number of impressive performances this year, Jackson has been able to bridge the gap between her and Flo-Jo’s age-old world record.

Jamaican track star closes in on world record

Shericka Jackson is currently the fastest woman alive in the women’s 200m division. Last month in Budapest, the Jamaican track star bettered her own personal best when she clocked 21.41 seconds.

A few weeks ago in Brussels, Jackson highlighted that she is quite close to breaking Flo-Jo’s records and she will aim for it in Brussels and, if not then, in Eugene.

According to a Sportstar report, Jackson had said, “At the world championships I was so close. Coach and I have spoken and we are going after (the record) this year.”

Jackson may not have achieved world record glory yet, but she aims to inch closer to Flo Jo’s 35-year-old record. With this, her fandom is now eager to see her sprint through the finish line in the 200m heat. However, if she does not surpass Flo Jo’s record, Jackson has next year’s Paris Olympics to look forward to as she aims to create a long-awaited history.
