The ICON (that’s what World Athletics has entitled her with the utmost respect), Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, is all set to enter her fifth Olympic hunt today. The rival American camp has its hope invested in Sha’Carri Richardson to pull off the miracle against the Jamaican legend. But before these two phenomenal athletes contest each other on the track, an incident attracted the limelight for all the wrong reasons. As per the update, the security facility outside of the warm-up area at Stade de France stopped Pryce from entering the zone today. 

Their reason? Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce arrived on her own, leaving her team bus in the zone. So, the security service failed to update her official entry. However, just before the heavily rated women’s 100m event, such an issue has raised a lot of eyebrows. Most of them have brick-batted the lackadaisical service at the Paris Olympics. But why did such a lack of communication develop in a contest like the Paris Olympic Games?

Well, we didn’t have to go hither and thither to find the answer, as one of the shared visuals from the same hour and same venue served a few insights. On X, a sports enthusiast shared a 27-second snippet displaying Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce narrating her experience of the incident with someone. She looked to be in utter disbelief at the entire situation.

In the snippet, the 37-year-old can be heard saying, “They said, they changed the rule yesterday.” The rule she was referring to was regarding the accommodation in the Games Village and the subsequent accreditation to enter the venue. So what do the Olympic Village rules say?

According to Team USA’s Olympic Village Director Daniel Smith, staying in the village is not mandatory. Athletes who opt out from staying in the village have to find their accommodation. But official transport to the venue will only be available for the athletes staying in the village. For those staying outside, “Paris 2024 won’t provide you transportation from your specific hotel,” Smith explained. “All of the meals, all of those additional pieces that come along with logistics that athletes in the Village get, you stay out, all of that is on you,” he further added.

Referring to that, Shelly-Ann added, “So you’re asking all the athletes who, for whatever reason, don’t stand at the Village, then they can’t come to the gate?”

That seemed a relevant question, as the 10-time world champion explained that she had not experienced such a low yesterday when she came to the venue for her practice. “We came through this yesterday and through security and was okay. The man said we can’t go, and go the other way where everybody else has entered, come back through that way.”  Notably, the USA Basketball team also does not stay in the Olympic Village. Meanwhile, Shelly-Ann alone was not the one to face this.

When Sha’Carri arrived at the venue in her blue tracksuit, she was seen standing outside the entrance and requesting security personnel to let her in. However, her efforts seemed to have gone in vain as the discussion went on for a long, but the security denied her entry into the arena. Sometime later, Richardson was seen sitting on the curb. If that was not enough, a news just before the semis made things further go awry.

• UPDATE: Fans were astounded right before the 100m semi-finals when Pryce announced her withdrawal from the event because of a hamstring injury during warmup.

Taking all these together, the entire situation turned into a whole fiasco when fans unleashed their wrath!

Sha’Carri Richardson and Shelly-Ann’s fans dig up Usain Bolt’s incident

Sports enthusiasts don’t forget any slight detail. Many still remember what Usain Bolt had to face at the 2017 World Championships. The fastest man alive failed to complete the 4x100m relay because of his injury, which led to his ultimate retirement. On that day, he and other sprinters had to wait for 45 minutes after their warm-up for the actual race. Although no one said that this is what led to the injury, Bolt was evidently agitated with that.

The Jamaican relay team was kept waiting in the call room where the athletes could not run and jog to stay warm. “It was unusual. I knew I had to stay warm. We got into second call room to stride out which was fine. But we were taken to the area behind the boarding to be ready to run, but we waited there for 10-15 minutes,” Bolt had said later. The fans did not take time to get the crux out of it.

One comment goes, “I hate it when they start moving like this injuries may even occur because of such behaviour. I mean Bolt got an injury in 2017 because of such delays prior to the relay final.” One track and field fan commented, aiming right at that part: “Paris Olympics continue their disgusting behaviour of athletes, Shelly Ann is a legend!” In the meantime, several fans argued that there may have been Sha’Carri Richardson as well, who had to face a similar fate. 

Another follower vented the same frustration by adding, “That’s crazy! Hope the situation has been addressed.” Meanwhile, since Shelly-Ann also pulled off because of hamstring injury like that of Bolt, widespread speculation started flying that lack of proper warmup and of being locked out might have caused that. Jamaican chef de mission Ian Kelly stepped in to clear the air.

Kelly told Reuters, “Mrs Fraser-Pryce was allowed to enter the warm up track but from another gate from which she was directed to enter from. There is no truth that she was not allowed to enter the stadium. Unfortunately, she was not able to compete due to an injury sustained during her final warmup.” But there was a clear lack of communication on the authority’s part that the fans did not spare. 

One fan thinks negatively about that, as the concerned comment remains, “These officials have been nothing but putrid since these games started @WorldAthletics” Furthermore, the same officials gave the athletes the badge; why did that not come to work today? One follower had this pertinent question, “Nonsense. All the athletes have badges. Do these ppl know the importance of a timely warn up”. Ultimately, it is the officials’ responsibility to answer athletes and fans appropriately. 

Therefore, they need to put things up when fans comment, “Officials up to their bs as usual”. While the track and field community has yet to get over the shock of Shelly-Ann’s withdrawal, it remains to be seen if the last week of the game continues smoothly without such hitches.
