This past Saturday, at the AAU Junior Olympics Games, Jonathan Simms broke a host of 15-16-year-old division records. They include national records, state records, and even a 28-year-old world record. As Simms finished the 15-16yo 400m final event, he clocked a lightning pace of 45.12 seconds to secure a top finish on the podium. In the process of his historic run, he surpassed a World age group record, previously held by Obea Moore (45.14, 1995). In addition to this, he also set a new sophomore class record, surpassing Tyrese Cooper’s achievement (45.38, 2017).

However, the list does not end here. Simms also left behind Aldrich Bailey’s mark of 45.19 seconds, set in 2012, and created a new Texas state record with his run. He also set a new AAU national record, overtaking Tyrese Cooper’s legacy of 45.23 seconds set in 2016. Breaking Cooper’s record meant Simms broke the overall AAU 400m record by default, which was set by Cooper in 2016 with his 45.23-second run. With one single run, Simms broke a total of five records. What was even more impressive was that he achieved this historic feat as a high school sophomore. However, despite breaking all these records, Simms still wasn’t done. Through his recent runs, Simms has indicated to the track world that he is the next big thing in the sport.
