The Boston Marathon keeps getting bigger and better every year. Jim Rooney, the Boston Chamber of Commerce chief, created history in 2019 when the marathon garnered a whopping $38.7 million. However, that record was soon broken, as the 127th Boston Marathon in 2023 experienced something special. Breaking all the previous records, the tournament raised $40.2 million to support several non-profit organizations. 

And now, in 2024, the tournament has grown as big as one can imagine. Boasting an incredible boost of $200 million, the stakes are ever so high in this year’s marathon. If the reports are to be believed, this year’s event will be the grandest in the post-pandemic era. 

The 128th Boston Marathon is set to establish a new record

With 30000 runners coming in, the Boston Marathon is expected to garner $200 million to help charities in their noble cause. Apart from the competitors, crowds from 130 countries, including the United States, have flown in to witness the spectacle. Due to the increased demand, the prices of the hotels are soaring at the moment. To spend a night in Boston, one would have to shell out $510 on average. The local restaurants, too, are bracing themselves for a full surge during the weekends.

And making it all happen, along with Jim Rooney, is the Bank of America Corp. The organization has recently joined hands to facilitate as the primary sponsor for the marathon. Previously, Manulife Financial Corp. had the honor of serving as the sponsor for close to forty years. With the huge amount of money coming in, as many as 200 non-profit organizations are expected to reap rich benefits

Reflecting on the spectacle, Jim Rooney compared the craze with that of the Super Bowl. He also emphasized the impact the tournament would have on tourism. Rooney said, It will be the biggest year for tourism since the pandemic, with people eager to return to travel.” Meanwhile, the wheel of change has been turning since last year itself.

Over 200 organizations supported the Boston Marathon to breach the $40 million mark in 2023

Ahead of the 2023 Boston tournament, the organizers set up a fundraising campaign on the Given Gain website. They urged people and organizations to actively donate to make their event a grand success. Surely enough, 249 organizations chimed in, helping the overall amount raised breach $40 million. 

Meanwhile, to make things even more special, legendary NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski will be the Grand Marshall this year. This is an initiative to honor the 31-year-old footballer, who has contributed significantly to the overall development of Boston.
