Is Ezra Frech the most inspiring athlete of our time? Share your thoughts!

“I want my legacy to be the greatest Paralympian of all time,” Ezra Frech told NBC Sports in April this year. It seems the 19-year-old Paralympic icon is well on his way to achieving that dream. Frech already held the T63 high jump world record ahead of the trials, but he surpassed his own performance with a stellar display, shattering both his world and U.S. records.

As Ezra Frech geared up for his fourth jump, he set the bar at 1.97m, 0.02m higher than his previous record. The crowd held their breath as the 2023 Paris World Championships gold medalist ran up to the bar, and burst into elation as he cleared it flawlessly. Frech matched the crowd’s enthusiasm as his teammate rushed to congratulate the man who beat his own world record.

During his world record-breaking performance at the Paralympic Trials, Ezra Frech cleared 1.82m, followed by 1.85m before skipping 1.88m to jump 1.91m. However, instead of trying to match his world record, the 2x Parapan American Games shot for glory and achieved it. Besides the high jump, the 19-year-old Paris-bound athlete finished second in the 100m sprint.

However, if you’re wondering what the T63 high jump stands for, we’ve got you covered. The Paralympics have several classifications to help group athletes. T63 designates high jumpers who compete with the absence of one leg above the knee. The single-leg amputee from California falls into this classification as he competes with a left prosthetic leg.

Ezra Frech wasn’t the only athlete re-writing history at the 2024 U.S. Paralympic Trials. Track and field star Tara Davis-Woodhall’s husband Hunter Woodhall was on a roll at the event, breaking multiple records in different events.

On Friday, 21-year-old 2x Paralympic medalist Hunter Woodhall hit a personal best in the 100m dash prelims clocking in 10.75s. Woodhall’s wife celebrated his attempt, which was good enough for a new 100m American record. The Toyko 2020 silver medalist’s momentum continued into Saturday, where Woodhall set another American record in the 400m sprint.

Besides Ezra Frech and Hunter Woodhall, two other track and field athletes also etched their names into the history books. David Prince ran 200m in 22.41s to register a new world record on Friday. Meanwhile, discus throw winner Christina Gardner made a 23.04m throw setting a new world record in the process. While Jarryd Wallace and Derek Loccident also achieved world records in the long jump event, those were wind-assisted attempts.

After his historic performance, the L.A. resident joined his fellow record-breakers and Paralympic Trials winner as part of Team USA’s Paralympic contingent heading to Paris on August 28th.
