Jamaican sprinting icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is a force to be reckoned with. A Twitter post about Bolt and Fraser-Pryce shared by Track Spice on their official handle is going viral. The post is captioned as, “Two of the Greatest Sprinters in history, Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce and Usain Bolt won their first gold medal in 2009 together in 100m and got their first bronze medal in their last World Championships in 100m.”
This coincidence holds remarkable significance, and both of these legendary athletes would surely appreciate the delightful twist of fate that connects them. On August 16, 2009, at the 2009 World Championships, Usain Bolt did something that no one had ever imagined. He broke his own 100-meter world record and finished the race in a stunning 9.58 seconds.
With this stupendous time, Bolt also claimed his first-ever 100-meter gold at the world championships. It was the event that also witnessed Bolt setting another world record of 19.19 seconds in the 200 meters. While Usain Bolt reigned supreme in the men’s division, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce etched her name into history in the women’s category. She won her first world championship gold after clocking an incredible time of 10.73 seconds. She also helped Jamaica win the 4x100m relay event.

Years have passed since this historic event. Usain Bolt retired in 2017, and Fraser-Pryce was most likely running her last World Athletics Championship in Budapest last month where she claimed an individual bronze in the 100 meters. The striking similarity is that Bolt too had won a bronze in the 100 meters in his last heat.

Their last medal in 100m may have similarities, but Pryce takes one step forward in the all-time list
On August 22, 2023, Pryce was up against the likes of American prodigy Sha’Carri Richardson and another Jamaican legend, Shericka Jackson. After finishing the race at 10.77 seconds, Fraser-Pryce settled for the bronze. This was Fraser-Pryce’s first bronze medal in the world championships, a feat similar to Usain Bolt’s.
Bolt was running his last professional event during the World Athletics Championships in 2017. He finished third in the 100 meters after clocking a time of 9.95 seconds against Justin Gatlin, who won the title with 9.92 seconds, and Christian Coleman, who finished second with 9.94 seconds.

Pryce is now second in the all-time list behind American great, Allyson Felix, who leads the standings with 20 medals. 10 gold medals, including five in the 100m, four silver, and now her first bronze stands as a testament to the 36-year-old’s athletic excellence.
