Track and field star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone boasts not one, but two Olympic golds and three World Champion titles in the 400m hurdles. Though sidelined by injury in 2023, she’s bounced back, eyes firmly set on the Paris Olympics podium.

Lindsey Vonn is not only known for her achievements, but for her brush with her debilitating slew of injuries. Even though she has retired, surgeries continue to be a part of her life. Also in 2018, Lindsey Vonn said, “I wish I could keep skiing. I wish my body didn’t hurt as bad as it does.“ During the 2017-18 World Cup, a back injury made her miss the event. Further back in 2015-16, a preseason ankle fracture in New Zealand sidelined Vonn briefly, while a crash during a super-G in Andorra in 2016 revealed knee fractures, forcing her to end her season prematurely.
These incidents highlight the challenges she has faced, including enduring complete ACL tears and other significant injuries, such as during the 2013-14 World Cup and the 2013 World Championships.
Shaun White – a snowboarding auteur
In 2009, Shaun suffered a crash during a training run, resulting in a serious ankle injury. Then again, in 2016, Shaun White’s quest for a fourth Olympic gold nearly met a disastrous end after a harrowing accident during a training session in New Zealand. According to USA Today Shaun said in the video, “I scared myself. I haven’t really had that much blood coming out of me before.”
In a bid for a difficult trick on an Olympic superpipe, White’s miscalculation led to a brutal collision with the rim, causing extensive facial injuries despite wearing a helmet. Rushed to a hospital nearly 186 miles away via helicopter, White underwent emergency surgery and received 62 stitches to mend his wounds, requiring a five-day hospital stay.
Trayvon Bromell – track and field’s inexorable collider
Trayvon Bromell, lauded for his lightning starts and earth-shattering finishes, has seen his path constantly diverted by a cruel twist of fate: injuries. From a shattered stress fracture halting his dreams at the World Junior Championships at just 18 to a torn hamstring hindering his professional debut in 2014, he also sustained a torn right hamstring, impacting his performance and delaying his professional debut.
Notably, a brutal Achilles tear in 2016 sidelined him from the Rio Olympics, where he was a medal hopeful in the 100m. But Bromell’s story doesn’t end there. 2021 saw a triumphant comeback, his blistering performances rekindling the track and field world’s excitement.

Also in 2015, Gabby Douglas encountered a knee injury just before departing for the world championships, though its severity wasn’t apparent until afterwards, as per reports from Douglas’ mother following the Olympic Trials.
