Rachel Foster conquered her odds when she ran in the Boston Marathon the previous week, after recovering from a prolonged coma. It was indeed her immense willpower and determination that fueled her to chase her dreams and push all the barriers. Even when doctors thought she doesn’t have a chance to recover, the athlete showed great improvement to eventually getting ready for the impending race.

Paying tribute to her unmatched resilience, the Special Olympics committee recently shared a post on Instagram featuring this Oklahoma native. Even after meeting with a terrible scooter accident, Foster overcame her brain injury and landed on the finish line. Let’s hear the story where she became her own hero.

It was November when this restaurant owner from Oklahoma broke 17 bones and underwent two brain surgeries due to a horrifying electric scooter accident. That injury put her on life support for ten long days. But surprisingly, even at that phase she only thought of redeeming herself through the marathon and she did it! Foster achieved her redemption after running 26.2 miles and reaching the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

On April 25, 2023, The Olympics shared the story of her courage and determination. Mentioning her “Running to recovery,” they penned, “Rachel Foster, a 35-year-old woman from Oklahoma, is a wonderful example of the power of perseverance.⁠..” in the caption. Describing her determination, the athlete shared, “I’ve been so excited for this day. It literally helped me walk again. I know that sounds crazy but the thought of doing this, and being here, helped me first walk, then jog, and then run.”

Even though she has come a long way, the 35-year-old felt that she still has a long way to go. Moreover, her husband John Foster, with whom she has been married for 11 years, and her marathon partner Tim Altendorf, thought it was a miracle that she recovered so fast. Mr. Foster stated, “She’s the toughest person I’ve ever met in my life, and I thought, if this is what she said her goal was, she’s probably going to achieve it.”

However, Rachel started walking again in January, just three months before the race. Throughout her journey, she never lost hope of running in the marathon. But the athlete again faced a setback when she pulled a muscle two weeks before the event. But that definitely couldn’t hinder her spirit, as she thought, “I’ve gotten over so much in the past couple months — a pulled muscle is not going to stop me.”
