The forthcoming 776 Invitational by Serena Williams’ husband and Reddit founder, Alexis Ohanian has added another dimension in track and field. The women-only event, set to take place in September boasts of a massive prize pool of $500,000. The 2x Olympic medalist sprinter Gabby Thomas has been a prominent face of the endeavor since its launch. After that Ohanian also teased Sha’Carri Richardson’s participation in that. Now it seems that one more star is onboard and that too beyond track and field.

Ohanian posted a cryptic message on his X handle that has observers and followers guessing. With an eye emoji, he wrote, “it’s happening,” which was a reaction to remarks made by NFL player Robert Griffin III regarding the need for improved track and field coverage. Understandably, it raises anticipation that Griffin might be the newest associate in the event.

Ohanian’s goal for the 776 Invitational is ideally aligned with Griffin’s activism on X. A fascinating element is added to the plot by Robert Griffin III’s involvement. Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has made an argument for improved coverage of track and field competitors. His post urged for more acknowledgment and media coverage of the efforts of various track athletes, both male and female, and highlighted their successes.

Robert Griffin III, also known by his nickname “RG3,” spent eight seasons in the NFL, mostly with the Washington Redskins. RG3’s post and Ohanian followed with an eye emoji, signals that the NFL player might be connected in some way. This exchange has increased curiosity over Griffin’s potential involvement in the event. However, Alexis Ohanian has been a pillar to support female athletes.

Alexis Ohanian’s backing for women athletes

Women’s sports have always had Alexis Ohanian as a fervent supporter. He recently announced the 776 Invitational, which will take place in September and promises the biggest prize money ever for a track and field competition only for women. The event winner will receive $60,000, while the runners-up and third-place winners will receive $25,000 and $10,000, respectively. This large expenditure aims to provide women’s track and field additional attention and financial resources.

Ohanian sparked more enthusiasm on Instagram by posting a video that included well-known athletes like Sha’Carri Richardson. Moreover, in the launch video, Sha’Carri Richardson made several appearances alongside Gabby Thomas and Julien Alfred. The purpose of producing a must-see competition for female track stars was highlighted in the video and the posts that went along with it. “Mark my words, the 776 Invitational is gonna make history,” Ohanian mentioned in a post on Instagram. “We’re hosting a female-only event to unite the fastest women in the world in competition for the largest prize purse *ever*. There’s nothing else like it.” His attempts to raise awareness of the sport are beginning to bear fruit, and his dedication to the cause is apparent.

Ohanian’s efforts have continuously sought to close the exposure and wage inequities in women’s athletics, from funding Angel City FC to endorsing projects like The Sports Bra, a bar devoted to presenting women’s sports. He recently tweeted,  “¯_(ツ)_/¯ but I’m here now,” which emphasizes his dedication to being present and involved in the spot. Additionally, offering exceptionally large prize money, the 776 Invitational is expected to be a historic event in the track and field calendar because of its potential to change the perception of women’s athletics. Thus, the event hopes to redefine the norm for showcasing and celebrating female athletes with high-profile involvement and support.
