In an interview with Olympics.com, Allyson Felix stated that her final race at the Tokyo Olympics left an indelible mark on her career. It represented more than just another competition; it symbolized her ability to overcome adversity and embrace motherhood while excelling in her sport. Having given birth to her daughter prematurely, Felix’s journey to the games was a showcase of her strength and determination.
Her performance, earning a bronze in the 400m and a gold in the 4x400m relay, showcased the spirit of this 11 times Olympics gold medalist and her commitment to excellence. During her last Olympics, Felix had the opportunity to run in shoes created by her own brand, Saysh. This milestone held a deep significance for her.
She had faced a highly publicized controversy with her former sponsor Nike. The 70% pay cuts she endured due to pregnancy led her to part ways with Nike and start her own shoe brand ‘Saysh’ in collaboration with Athleta. Through this endeavor, Felix aimed to advocate for better maternal policies in sports and empower female athletes.
Talking about this Felix stated, “It was special for me. It was much bigger than just running. It was all about, overcoming adversity and being a mother. I got to run in shoes that my company created. And I think it was a full-circle moment. And so that one always sticks out as being very significant.” But she emerged victorious regardless of what happened off-track and finally bid adieu to her celebrated career.
