Last year Shericka Jackson did the unthinkable in track and field. The Budapest WAC witnessed the 200m sprinting queen almost toppling Florence Griffith Joyner’s WR clocking, 21.34 by a whisker. Her performance last year already elevated her inches above her compatriots in earning the Olympic qualification standard this year. Moreover, Shericka Jackson’s spirited achievements from last season motivated a well-recognized Jamaican platform to commemorate her in due process as well.

The RJR Sports Foundation kept the 29-year-old athlete in the nomination for the year’s best title. In the same list, another Olympic medalist sneaked in to register a blistering opposition to Jackson. However, the last announcement was captivating.

On January 19, the RJR Sports Foundation held the award ceremony for naming the best sportsman and sportswoman of Jamaican native. Last year, the spearheads were Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Commonwealth Games champion Rasheed Broadbell, to win the coveted title. But this year Shericka Jackson flouted the same Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s chance to register her tall claim on the glory. So in that line, the 200m world champion wore her celebration mood vividly. Her IG fans remained witness in the process as the Jamaican phenom took to Instagram to post her event-day appearance with a fitted caption. “She’s royal… The RJR sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards”, it conceded. However, this wasn’t Shericka’s first time on the contention list.

Last year, Shericka Jackson had found her on the same berth as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, only to come close second to the latter. This year also, Shelly-Ann is on the contender’s list with another Olympic champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn. Moreover, Shericka Jackson also received her nomination for the People’s Choice award as well. Her 2023 season performance seems to have helped her gain the upper hand over the others’ possibilities in concluding the final selection.

The mythical 2023 season of Jackson

Apart from the Budapest WAC meet last year, Shericka Jackson had appeared in 10 meets, including the Jamaican national championships. In 10 of them, she stood in the top position, defeating the spearheads. The 21.41 was the best attempt from the Jamaican sprinter in the way. But next month in Bruxelles, Shericka Jackson posted 21.48  as her second-best attempt to claim the WR.

However, in the 100m sprinting as well, the Budapest WAC undoubtedly framed Shericka, bowing only to Sha’Carri Richardson in the final. In that final, she defeated Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Now, on January 19, Shericka Jackson repeated the same result, albeit in the absence of the American opponent in sprinting shoes, Sha’Carri Richardson.
