However, amidst the determination and passion of the athletes, a track and field athlete Dawn Harper-Nelson has dropped words of wisdom that took everyone by surprise. This American track athlete is a gold medalist in the 100m hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. She won the silver in the 2012 London Olympic Games and the 2017 World Championships.

She expressed, “The Olympic journey starts with accepting death”. Adding further, she said, “Death on track, death in the field, death in the weight room. Every time you see your coach. It’s absolute death”. With the achievements of the athletes who perform in the arena tirelessly and relentlessly, it was their prerogative to chase the Olympic dream. All the pain will ultimately pay off in the end because its our dream and our dream alone to clinch victory on the global podium.

Nelson further expressed, “Sounds crazy, but if you are an athlete, you know what I mean when you say I died today in that workout.” She shared quips for the athletes to hype them up. Accepting glory and to stop worrying over the now and just accept the journey as is what she drove forward.

After explaining the intensity of practice the athletes do for qualifying and then winning Olympic glory, she reminded the athletes why they chose this journey to begin with. She stated, “You literally didn’t know how you were going to make it through,?but you knew deep down in order for this dream to live you had to push through”.
