Elon Musk backing track and field—game changer or just another publicity stunt?

Alexis Ohanian’s track and field brainchild, the 766 Invitational, was first announced in April this year. The event is poised to bring the fastest women in the world to compete in the first-ever female-only track event. It also has one of the largest purses for an event like this. However, it has now got a brand new name: Athlos NYC. Set to take place on September 26th, it promised to modernize viewership for fans worldwide. And it looks like it has taken the first step in that direction.

As the event date slowly approaches, RunBlogRun shared an unexpected update on X: “Athlos will be streaming on X! @athlos.” Ohanian adds some clarity by explaining why they’re going down this path. While many fans enjoy watching women’s sports, they often have to tackle paywalls or don’t ideally know when they’re taking place. Elon Musk has helped tackle that situation. How? Athlos will partner with global partners to broadcast their NYC race. “For @athlos, we’re going BIG—AND ACCESSIBLE,” he stated on X.

So, where can you access the event? “We heard you loud and clear. We are broadcasting on YouTube, X, ESPN, and DAZN.” However, if you’re more of a traditional cable individual, they’ve got you covered too. The event will be re-broadcast on ESPN 2 on September 29. “If you can’t make it to New York on September 26, you will be able to tune in from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.” By taking a more fan-centric approach, this might help shine a spotlight on women’s sports.

This is exactly why Ohanian has chosen to associate with them. He stated how they help bring these female track elites’ talents front and center. They’re also mission-aligned by carrying huge portfolios of women’s sports. Big names like Gabby Thomas, Faith Kipyegon, Alexis Holmes, Tori Lewis, and more will grace your screens later this month. Thomas was one of the first names announced and strongly advocated for the advancement of women’s track.

Athlos put their money where their mouth is by ensuring all 36 participants get a cash prize. As per their website, 6th place will receive $2.5K, up to first place, who will walk away with a whopping $60K cash prize. As their website states it, “Expect prizes for every lane.” However, that’s not all! The champion will also receive a crown from Tiffany—we can get behind that! While it may not seem like much, the cash prize is the place to start for now, according to Ohanian’s vision.

Have an interesting take?

Who is Alexis Ohanian, if not a supportive spouse? Often seen cheering Serena Williams on during her Grand Slam victories, the Athlos founder was inspired to invest in women’s sports. However, Gabby Thomas’ stellar performance at the Olympic Trials only seemed to add more fuel to the fire. Ohanian went as far as comparing it to having ‘Grand Slam PTSD’ like he did watching his wife compete on the court.

Having Thomas as his headliner is also a stroke of genius. The sprinter has been vying for more visibility in the sport. When she was asked what change she’d like to see shortly, her answer was pretty straightforward. “I think the first step is: the fundamental access to watching track and field.” And Ohanian heard her loud and clear. With Elon Musk’s help, this move will revolutionize the fan’s experience of watching the meet. And Athlos already looks like it’s on the right path to being a game changer.
