The 2024 Paris Olympics are all the rage around the world at the moment. The celebrated mega-sporting event always witnesses some new changes every four years. The Tokyo iteration last time saw the introduction of youth-centric sports like surfing and skateboarding. A similar pattern is being followed for 2024, with ‘breaking’ making its official Olympic debut.

The inclusion of these new sports in the Olympics was welcomed by everyone for the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games. However, the same isn’t the case with the upcoming Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. While America also has a list of sports to be added in Olympics roster, a Great Britain athlete stands against it. In fact, the athlete has accused America of exploiting its position as a host nation to increase its medal tally.

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics have received several new additions that have been approved by the International Olympic Committee. The newly inducted sports include baseball/softball, lacrosse, cricket, squash, and flag football. While the new games are being widely welcomed, an Olympics veteran from Great Britain smells a ploy in all of this. She posted a tweet from her X handle accusing America of taking unfair advantage of their position as hosts for the 2028 Olympics.

According to the tweet of distance runner Eilish McColgan, “The USA just adding the sports that only they do?! Is that allowed? In that case, why didn’t Tokyo bring back Sumo Wrestling and clean up the medals…” The Great Britain runner took aim at the addition of lacrosse and baseball/softball where the Americans majorly thrive. However, there is one game that is included in the 2028 Olympics roster but did not have American roots.

The return of cricket to the Olympics in 2028

Cricket is one of the most popular, yet very few nations play it well enough to qualify for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup. Cricket was last played as an Olympic sport 123 years ago in 1900. Interestingly, the sport is making a return just after the Olympic Games of Paris. The ICC has worked hard to spread cricket to new nations and has offered them an associate membership with the ICC.

This has majorly helped in its bid for a return to the LA Olympic Games. While America does have a cricket team of its own, it isn’t strong enough to be called a powerhouse in the sport. On the other hand, Great Britain’s England is the reigning champion of the ICC World Cup.
