17-Year American Curse Shattered by Nic Fink After Defeating Adam Peaty at Doha Worlds

In the swimming world, no fan is a stranger to Nic Fink. While Fink’s Olympic participation is still up in the air, the swimming sensation isn’t above stealing a few headlines along the way. As he just showed his prowess by winning the men’s 100-meter breaststroke at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha. This win also broke the curse of 17 years, as Fink became the first American to win the event after Brendan Hansen’s stint in 2007.

The American swam dominantly through the pool in front of a sold-out stadium. As a result of the swimmer’s joy at having upset Adam Peaty, the two-time defending Olympic champion in the 100-meter breaststroke, the news of his victory quickly spread over the internet.

According to the X post by Buttstroke Swimming, Fink nevertheless won the championship in 58.57 seconds, achieving a feat the American athletes hadn’t accomplished since Brendan Hansen won the event in 2007. But with Adam Peaty swimming just behind the American, it wasn’t easy to pull off. With unwavering resolve, Fink prepared himself in Lane 5 to begin the competition.

Nick swam the opening fifty meters of the race with dominance, displaying tremendous speed and correct strokes. According to Olympics.com, Fink revealed his feelings after the event, saying, “This means a lot, I’m really happy with the time, and obviously the place.”
