In the swimming world, no fan is a stranger to Nic Fink. While Fink’s Olympic participation is still up in the air, the swimming sensation isn’t above stealing a few headlines along the way. As he just showed his prowess by winning the men’s 100-meter breaststroke at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha. This win also broke the curse of 17 years, as Fink became the first American to win the event after Brendan Hansen’s stint in 2007.

The American swam dominantly through the pool in front of a sold-out stadium. As a result of the swimmer’s joy at having upset Adam Peaty, the two-time defending Olympic champion in the 100-meter breaststroke, the news of his victory quickly spread over the internet.

An elegant swimming performance

Nic Fink’s pool was not comprised of inexperienced players. Adam Peaty, a formidable competitor in these types of events, was on the swimming grid. According to the X post by Buttstroke Swimming, Fink nevertheless won the championship in 58.57 seconds, achieving a feat the American athletes hadn’t accomplished since Brendan Hansen won the event in 2007. But with Adam Peaty swimming just behind the American, it wasn’t easy to pull off. With unwavering resolve, Fink prepared himself in Lane 5 to begin the competition.

Nick swam the opening fifty meters of the race with dominance, displaying tremendous speed and correct strokes. On the other hand, Peaty had some challenging circumstances throughout the second half of the event. Although Nic Fink surged clear of the pack, Peaty had to battle with Italian Swimmer Nicolo Martinenghi, who was vying for second place. By beating Peaty, Martinenghi shocked everyone with his silver feat. In the post-race interview, the American swimmer couldn’t contain his excitement as it was a major victory for him.

Nic Fink shining bright with his win

Thanks to Nic Fink’s dominant swim, the 17-year title drought is over. Adam Peaty was shocked, but the American swimmer came out on top, and he’ll be ready for what comes next. According to Olympics.com, Fink revealed his feelings after the event, saying, “This means a lot, I’m really happy with the time, and obviously the place.”

In spite of his dominant victory, Fink took the time to recognize the “bunch of great breaststrokers” who took part in the event. The swimmer respected the competitors as he had the opportunity to swim against them during the “Olympic year.” As a “great stepping stone” leading up to the summertime Paris Olympics, he went on to stress the significance of the occasion.
