Katherine ‘Katie’ Ledecky was born to her mother, Mary Gen, and her father, David Ledecky. Mary Gen ignited the passion for swimming in a young Katie since she was a swimmer herself. She competed successfully at the collegiate level for the University of New Mexico. Mary Gen even qualified for the national championships 3 times.
Mary Gen’s interest in swimming was ignited when Katie’s aunt, as a 4-year-old, fell into the water from a dock in Glacier National Park and nearly drowned. This led to Katie Ledecky’s grandfather, Bud, being strict about all his children learning how to swim. On the other hand, David Ledecky is an Ivy League attorney.
He studied at Harvard, where he received his BA degree in 1982. Then he furthered his education at Yale, where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1986. David went on to work for the prestigious law firm of Kirkland & Ellis. Ultimately, he quit in 2011 to help coach his daughter. Despite having attained a career as successful as hers, Katie Ledecky does not let the pressure get to her and her father is glad for it.
He said to Sports Illustrated, “She doesn’t think in those terms of being the biggest thing in the sport.” Adding, “I don’t get the sense of her feeling any pressure at all.” With such supportive parents guiding her from a young age, Katie Ledecky certainly has a winning advantage in her swimming career.

How Ledecky’s family played a huge role in her career
Ledecky’s parents enrolled her and her brother Michael in a swimming facility at a young age. Katie often credits Michael for being her first competitive partner, saying, “I just always enjoyed swimming with him and I think that’s how I really found my passion for the sport.”
Her knack for the sport was evident from a young age when she joined the Palisades Swim and Tennis Club, later going on to train under National Capital Swim Club coach Yuri Suguiyama. Her later coach, Bruce Gemmell, said, “Ledecky is the way she is partly because of a combination of her mental toughness and the unconditional love of her inner circle. Ledecky’s parents, Mary Gen and Dave, dispense hugs, not technical advice, leaving the post-race analysis to Ledecky’s coaches.“
