“My parents do a great job with keeping their distance and letting me do my thing. They just want me to be happy. They don’t really care how I swim at all, to be honest!” Kate Douglass said. This philosophy has propelled her to win multiple medals and become a famous name in swimming. Now, at the age of 22, she’s gearing up for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. But before that, she needs to qualify for trials that begin on June 15th.
In Paris, Douglass is setting her sights on even greater achievements. She is striving to compete in three or four swimming events at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Along with relay races, Douglass has a chance to make history by securing seven medals in a single Olympic Games making her the second woman to accomplish this feat. But this was all possible because of her supportive family, especially her two siblings who have been instrumental in propelling her towards this goal.

From the very beginning, Kate Douglass was destined for greatness, her talents apparent to her parents, William and Allison Douglass. Introduced to competitive swimming at the tender age of six, Kate exhibited a natural affinity for the sport, a quality her mother fondly recalls, “She probably started swimming competitively at about six-years-old, and she had a knack for it,” said her mother. With support from her family, including her siblings Abby and Will, Kate’s journey in swimming has been marked by a tight-knit bond.
As the elder sibling among of three, she acknowledges the balancing act her family undertakes to support her passion. “I would never make them sit through a five-hour swim meet, so it’s a lot of split time where I’m at a meet and my husband is with the other two,” she explains.
Despite her family’s deep-rooted love for soccer, Kate stands out as the lone swimmer. Her choice reflects her individuality, as she confidently embraces her role as the “black sheep” in a soccer-centric household. “My family isn’t a swim family. Both my siblings play soccer. My parents love to watch soccer. They didn’t swim. I’m the only one!” she proudly declares.

Despite swimming not being a traditional pursuit in her family, her parents have consistently championed her freedom to pursue her passion. “My parents do a great job with keeping their distance and letting me do my thing.” With their backing, Kate has carved out her journey establishing herself as a swimmer. However, Kate Douglass also shares a similar trait with her sister Abby.
Despite different sporting preferences, the Douglass sisters share one thing in common
When Kate Douglass was young, she had a way to keep herself motivated, during competitions. Her parents and coaches would promise her candy bars as rewards for doing well. While she used to enjoy baking chocolate chip cookies in the past, her preferences evolved over time. She developed an admiration for Taylor Swift.

In an interview with Wrex.com, Douglass received a surprise Taylor Swift cutout and humorously remarked, “Taylor, Taylor, you should come to Paris to watch me swim so that you can then sing me a song after my race and make all the pain go away.“ This lighthearted moment highlights her admiration for the pop icon.
Last year, she shared an Instagram post that included Kate and her sister Abby. They both were seen wearing t-shirts adorned with Taylor Swift’s image, accompanied by the caption, “Came for the tailgate, stayed for Taylor Swift.” It’s clear that the sisters share a deep appreciation for Swift’s music and persona.
