As the world’s gaze turns to the 2024 Olympic Games, the global swimming stars are hoping to make waves in Paris, literally. The US Olympic Team Trials will be hosted by Indianapolis this weekend, and the country’s swimmers are gearing up for a major showdown to secure their berth in the European capital. Among the most prominent names in the USA’s swimming circuit, two-time Olympic gold medalist Bobby Finke is among the frontrunners to represent the country in the French capital.
Being disqualified from the 2023 US Open was a major setback in Finke’s hopes of defending his Olympic gold. However, his triumphs at last year’s World Championships didn’t go unnoticed either. Now, as Finke heads to Lucas Oil Stadium, let’s take a look at how his family has been one of his greatest motivators.

The American record holder in the 800m and 1500m distances was born in Florida in 1999, into a family already immersed in swimming, as noted in an article by Chicago SEP. The St. Petersburg Aquatics (SPA) where Joe Finke is a coach, is steeped in a rich legacy. Even Bobby understands the legacy he represents. “The [St. Pete Aquatics] program has produced some amazing swimmers…I hope to continue this legacy going forward,” said the 2022 World Championships gold medalist in a 2021 interview with North East Journal. While Joe comprehends the drive and commitment that an athlete should display while competing, the SPA coach also understands that life is more than just collecting medals.
“What’s more important than results or medals is the person he is,” is the kind of career trajectory Joe envisions for his son. As another Olympics’ shadow looms larger overhead, it remains to be seen if Bobby’s family values and pursuit of greatness can help him bring home glory from the grand stage once again.
