Home/Swimming

The former NFL running back, Peyton Hillis, stole millions of hearts with his charismatic display of strength on the field. During his 7-year-long career, he played for elite teams such as Broncos, Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He stood the test of time and amassed 2,832 yards on the ground. But his real test came earlier this year when life threw the most terrifying curveball at him.

A family day at Pensacola, Florida, turned into a nightmare when two beloved members of Hillis’ family were on the brink of losing their lives. With both his niece and his son endangered due to a strong rip current, what Peyton Hillis managed to do was nothing short of a miracle.

When his niece and his son were caught under the perilous might of the ocean, Hillis had to make some hard choices. In an incident that the former NFL RB describes by saying, “It’s 100 percent a miracle that no one died”, he had to choose between saving his 8-year-old niece Camille and his 9-year-old son Orry. During that swimming accident that took place on January 4 this year, Hillis had to make a choice that probably no father would want any part of.

In an interview with ABC News, Hillis described the situation, and said, “I think the scariest point … was when I’m swimming to my son and I have to pass by him because my niece is in more danger.” Ultimately, Hillis did what had to be done and decided to first save his niece and come back for his son. As soon as the father of three reached his freaked-out niece, he placed her on a boogie board and pushed her to safety. Then he turned back to his son, but it almost seemed like it was too late. Peyton Hillis found his son in a completely limp state, with no strength left to swim or even hold on to his father. The ex-NFL player could do little but hold on to his son and stay afloat.

The 37-year-old described the gut-wrenching feeling, and said, “You can’t swim and you’re holding him, you’re seeing his eyes roll back in the back of his head.” Peyton Hillis was able to somehow get his son near the shore when he himself lost consciousness and started suffering through lung and kidney failure. He was resuscitated and airlifted to a hospital where he spent time in the ICU on a ventilator. During the interview, Hillis refused to label himself as a “hero” for saving two lives, and when asked what he would call himself, he simply said, “I call myself a dad”. When his act of bravery aired on Twitter, fans were astonished.
