The initiative particularly caters to individuals living in the Roxbury, Dorchester, and Hyde Park areas. This inclusive undertaking aims to address water safety education. It also ensures each person has equal prospects for enjoying aquatic activities securely.

Bridging the gap in water safety education
Delivering a speech at the recently renovated Paris Street pool in East Boston, Mayor Wu underlined the nature of eradicating disparities in water safety education, particularly among communities of color. She?explained, “For a long time, swim lessons have been inaccessible to families and communities of color because of cost or lack of public pools in their neighborhoods. This initiative aims to change that.”

To guarantee broad accessibility, complimentary swimming lessons will be offered at designated pools managed by both the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston and the Greater Boston YMCA. Through this collaborative effort alongside these esteemed organizations, Mayor Wu’s initiative effectively reaches out to provide adequate access to swimming instruction. The significant financial investment made towards realizing this vision through the implementation of the inclusive water safety program underlines Mayor Wus’ dedication to cultivating the security and welfare of Boston’s residents.
Mayor Wu’s $500,000 budget for swim safety
This year, a dedicated budget of $500,000 has been set aside for swim safety in the city budget. Thanks to this allocation, up to 500 children will have the opportunity to benefit from free swimming lessons, making?it even more convenient for interested individuals.

A study conducted by the USA Swimming Foundation revealed disparities in swimming ability among different racial and ethnic groups. The study found that 64% of African American children and 45% of Hispanic children have limited or no swimming ability, compared to 40% of white children. This data highlights the need for initiatives like our free swimming lessons to address these disparities and promote water safety for all children.
Addressing this issue, Commissioner Marta E. Rivera of the Boston Centers for Youth & Families expressed, “Given the alarming rate of minority children that cannot swim, this is a particularly important investment in East Boston, where over half of the population is Latino.”
