The University of Virginia’s Kate Douglass is arguably one of the best NCAA swimmers of all time. All previous TYR Pro Series events of 2024 have seen Douglass dish out incredible performances one after the other, with the highlight being her record-making 200m breaststroke at Knoxville in January. But traversing the road to the Paris Olympics is proving to be a more difficult challenge.

At the TYR Pro Swim Series in San Antonio, Texas, Douglass finished second in the women’s 100m final with 52.98 on the clock. The rare stumble on the way to Paris has her fans reeling from the shock. With Kate missing out on the Westmont leg of the series, many believed that she would make the most of the opportunities at hand and send a firm message to her opponents about her ambitions with the Paris Olympics. But that wasn’t to be.

In a recent post by Nelson Carter Jr. on X, the top five finishers of the race have been shared for fans to revere. As per the list, Kate came in behind the two-time Olympic medalist Siobhán Haughey of Hong Kong. The top five finishers in the 100m free event on the 2nd day of the TYR Pro event had a difference of 0.51 seconds between them. The 2020 Olympic medalist Torri Huske finished third, while Douglass’ Virginia teammate and 2023 World Championships gold medalist Gretchen Walsh came in fourth.

While 100m isn’t exactly Douglass’ forte, the 22-year-old did fairly well. Considering Haughey is a force to be reckoned with herself, we’d say the former did fairly well. Both the swimmers had an incredible time at last year’s US Open Championship, and it looks like they’re flexing all their muscles at every possible chance. And it wasn’t just the two of them who kept the audience on their toes with their stellar swims.

The nation’s best stars showcase their worth

In the men’s 100m free race, Olympic veteran Caeleb Dressel showed his worth once again as he picked up a first-place finish. After opting out of the January TRY Pro event in Knoxville, Dressel looks to be resolute in his determination to make the Paris Olympics a noteworthy event as he clocked 48.40 to win the event. Douglass once again had a brilliant moment as she completed the women’s 100m breaststroke event with 1:06.85 on the clock. While a podium finish didn’t happen, she still fared well.

Frenchman Leon Marchand, another star student of Bob Bowman, left the audiences in awe with his spectacular 1:54.97 finish in the men’s 200m fly, earning him another gold. With 4:01.41, Katie Ledecky dominated the waters in the women’s 400m fly race. With so many outstanding performances, who do you think will rise above the rest in Paris? Tell us in the comments!
