The 15-year-old teenager was visiting from Georgia and had been in the ocean with a friend and the friend?s mother. Although red flags were flying on the beach, warning beachgoers of the dangerous surf conditions from Hurricane Lee, three of them went into the sea for swimming. They had been on a swimming pool float when the teenager was suddenly pulled underwater by the powerful waves.
The two of the group were able to get back to shore, and they were taken to the local medical hospital. However, despite frantic efforts, he did not make it back to shore. Kelly Wheeler, a witness to the tragic incident, described the heartbreaking moment when the teenager went underwater and did not resurface. “It was tough sleeping last night,” Wheeler told First Coast News.

Fernandina Beach Police Chief Jeff Tambasco noted that the waves on that fateful day were the largest he had ever witnessed in Fernandina Beach, creating treacherous conditions for the swimmers. During a conversation with First Coast News, Tambasco stated, “The waves were the biggest I?ve ever seen them here, personally. It was very, very rough yesterday. The turbulence was something I’ve not seen here in Fernandina Beach.”
Local Woman?s Heart-Breaking Discovery on the Beach After 24 Hours
In response to the emergency, a comprehensive search and rescue operation was launched, involving both police and lifeguards. The search extended from the land, sea, and even air. Beach patrols continued overnight and into the following morning in a desperate attempt to locate the missing teenager. Unfortunately, the search for the swimmer came to a devastating conclusion when his lifeless body was discovered in the surf, approximately half a mile from where he was last seen.
In a puzzling twist, Kelly Wheeler, who had seen the teenager?s disappearance on Wednesday, heard a woman scream on the beach the following day. It turned out to be the same woman who had made the initial 911 call reporting the drowning. Both Wheeler and this unknown woman had witnessed the young boy go under the water, and shockingly, they both witnessed his lifeless body 24 hours later. Commenting on the incident, Wheeler said, “Today, I was walking on the beach and I see the woman again. And she made the 911 call again today.”
