Are the Paris Olympics failing our athletes with poor living conditions and food? What’s your take?

More controversies, ahoy! As if the “anti-sex” beds given to athletes at the Paris Olympics weren’t enough, stars are voicing their opinions about more issues that can tarnish the hosts’ reputation again. France has spent years and millions of manhours designing and building the Olympic Village for visitors to ensure their maximum comfort. And yet, many participants at this year’s Games can’t help but talk about its shambling conditions.

In a post on X by Buttstroke Swimming from just hours ago, Italian gold medalist swimmer Thomas Ceccon’s displeasure about the living conditions at the 2024 Paris Olympic Village has been shared. “There is no air conditioning, we don’t eat well and there are problems with the food,” Ceccon has been quoted saying in the social media post.

852 swimmers from around the world have come to Paris in search of honor and glory, and Ceccon thinks the Parisian authorities should have pulled up their socks better. The men’s 100m backstroke gold medalist in the French capital further noted that poor service like this is one of the main reasons for athletes to find other accommodation options other than the one they’re provided by tournament organizers.

But Thomas isn’t the only athlete who shared their grievances online. Members of Team Great Britain also took to social media to complain about the “subpar” conditions of the living apartments in the Olympic Village. Tom Daley, a British diver, did mention that the Village is “actually quite great,” but also noted that the food hall was chaotic most times of the day. On top of this, many also claimed that there wasn’t enough food available for the athletes.

Australian tennis star Daria Saville said on TikTok that food “ran out very quickly,” with meat options being the first to disappear from the tables. French caterers Sodexo Live are charged with providing 15,000 people with 40,000 meals every day, and yet, it looks like athletes aren’t getting their rations. Coco Gauff, American tennis celebrity, also shared her displeasure at how 10 athletes have to share only 2 bathrooms in the Olympic Village. While the Parisians understandably did their best, athletes just weren’t getting what they needed.

With the Olympics returning to the City of Love after a century, many believed the tournament would be a spectacle. Considering the magnitude of the whole affair, the hosts also went into overdrive to ensure Paris and other venues of the tournament would be spik and span to represent the iconic country and its people. However, controversies marred the 2024 Olympics from the opening ceremony itself, despite the people involved having their best intentions.

The Olympic Village was also built with the athletes’ benefits in mind. However, the beds provided to the stars created a lot of ruckuses among fans due to their alleged purpose. Even many athletes, out of curiosity, shared their opinions about the beds. Simone Biles, the iconic gymnast who won gold in Artistic Gymnastics just a day ago, wrote on TikTok “beds suck“. “From sleeping to bus to food… I don’t think there’s any athlete I have spoken with (who) is satisfied,” Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal said.

Now, adding more woe to France’s troubles, it looks like the lack of proper services is making things worse. Have you heard about the conditions in the Olympic Village too? How did that make you feel? Do let us know with a comment!
