However, there’s more to the story that usually remains hidden. Michael Phelps, the decorated athlete of all time, sheds light on that hidden secret.

The hushed topic that many still refuse to speak on for fear of being judged. But breaking the stereotype, Phelps opened up and talked about: mental health.

Reflecting on his mental health experience and the ongoing push for industry-wide change ahead of the seventh anniversary of his ground-breaking Sports Illustrated cover story, Phelps spoke his heart out. He dived deep into the role of USOPC and said, “they’re not offering anything.”

Though the swimming GOAT has retired from the sport, he remains an active supporter of it. Knowing the intricacies of the sporting world and the mental pressure that athletes go through, he highlighted the need to talk more about mental well-being.

Having suffered because of his mental health, the G.O.A.T. said,?“I want people to actually do something. The sport psychologists and all these different groups of people that they have hired, we don’t feel safe and comfortable going to them.” He further added, “so we don’t go to them, and then they still don’t understand why we don’t go to them.”

As a result, as Phelps acknowledged that a gap got created. Thus, in an attempt to bridge the disconnect, he has been trying to work ways through which the athletes can be helped. Learning from his own experience, the Olympian now wants to work toward the betterment of the younger generation.

Sharing his journey with mental health, the swimming maestro revealed how he was frustrated with the authorities. Getting no help from them, he highlighted the necessity of doing things by themselves. He is determined to make the community a better place.

He may have retired, but his connection with the sport isn’t done.?There’s more that he can do, more changes to ensure the space grows better. Already many young athletes have succumbed to the pressure and weight of the medals. He thus wants a different future and hence is working for the same. Phelps is living through examples.
