As the two shining beacons of the U.S. swim team entered the competition at Indianapolis this week, they seemed to be on opposite trajectories. Katie Ledecky and Caeleb Dressel entered the competition at a pivotal point, facing immense pressure to perform at the highest level. But by the time the competition ended, one athlete had displayed their best performance while the other struggled to qualify.
For Dressel, this was an important moment in his career. He needed to make it into the U.S. squad for the World Championships to be held next month in Fukuoka, Japan. However, his performance at the Day 1 finals at the Indiana University Natatorium has shocked fans. Dressel’s teammates, however, seem to have his back in these turbulent times.

Katie Ledecky speaks about her happiness at seeing Dressel return to swimming in a YouTube video. “There’s so much that you all don’t see on a day-to-day basis, just of the joy he brings to the pool deck every day and the impact he has on his teammates,” said Ledecky. Ledecky also said that she enjoys the training atmosphere where they support each other no matter what.
Seven-time Olympic gold medal winner, Dressel finished the preliminary race in the 29th rank. As a result, he could not qualify for the “A” or “B” finals. Fans could not fathom how Caeleb Dressel, who had previously won the World Championship twice and set multiple world records, could have such a disappointing performance. He finished the race in 49.42 seconds, nearly two and a half seconds off his own previous record timing of 46.96 seconds.
On the other hand, Ledecky performed exceptionally in vintage Ledecky fashion. She finished the 800 free at a record time of 8:07.07. It seems her decision to shift the training camp to Florida from Stanford has really paid off. It remains to see how she will perform in Japan next month. There is a high possibility that Team USA may not include Dressel for the same.

Most sports experts who follow professional swimming closely were already anxious about Dressel. They had noticed that the swimmer had taken a break after the Budapest Summer Championship games. He returned a few months later and explained in a social media post that he needed a break. “I know I can have swimming and happiness. I had them both at one point in my life and I’m working on it. If you need a break, take one.”, he said in a social media post.

After coming back, he competed in one meet in mid-May. That is why this competition was all the more important for his career. Experts believe the team will lose some advantage in future competitions without him. In the past, it was Dressel who was instrumental in Team USA winning five golds at Tokyo. Without him on the team, fans, too, are concerned about the team’s fate.
