Apart from its rich diversity and culture, Ireland has one of the most beautiful landscapes to discover. The country facing the mighty Atlantic Ocean exhibits some of the most breathtaking scenes. However, amid this beauty, the Irish water also brings a sense of danger with it, as the country is highly prone to drowning accidents.

On average, around 105 people drown every year in Irish waters, with the majority of deaths in males (78%). In the year 2022, 85 deaths were caused by drowning accidents. And since July, 42 people have already become victims of drowning accidents in Ireland. Recently, one more tragedy struck near an Irish county, as a woman in her 60s drowned at a popular spot.

Drowning incident at Wexford

On Sunday, a tragedy struck Wexford after a woman drowned at a popular swimming spot in the area. The woman, who is identified as being in her 60s, was swimming at Bannon Bay but struggled in the water and unfortunately drowned. The Bannon Bay place is a remote area located on the west coast of Wexford, Ireland. And is 11 kilometers northeast of the popular Lighthouse, Hook Head.

According to Irish Mirror, the garda, the state police of Ireland, reached the scene of the incident and declared the woman dead. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed yet, was then sent to the University Hospital in Waterford. A postpartum will be done to find the actual cause of the death while the investigation into the incident is still going on. Apart from this tragic incident, another drowning incident occurred in an Irish lake. In June, a father and son drowned in Donegal Lake. The pair had gone fishing at the lake.

Father and son drown at Co. Donegal Lough

On June 18, a happy fishing trip took a turn for the worse as Jonathan Christian and his 17-year-old son, Jacob Christian, drowned in the water. According to the media, the 17-year-old was trying to retrieve a bait box from the water. But the ripple had pushed the bait box considerably further away from the bucket. The 17-year-old who had followed the box struggled into the water and was unable to reach land. To save his son?s life, the father, along with his other 15-year-old son Benjamin Christian, went into the water. But unfortunately, Jonathan and Jacob both were engulfed in the water. As the 15-year-old revealed to the media, “I started to go down, and dad helped me back onto the rocks. I looked back out, and both were gone.”

In essence, such heartbreaking accidents highlight the dangers that come along with the water. These incidents also show the necessary need to educate people about water safety and precautions. Hopefully, the Irish authorities will take the necessary steps to avoid such accidents in the future.
