Can Adam Peaty's determination overcome the COVID-19 hurdles on his road to Paris 2024?

He promised to make a “fast, full recovery” and continue his “unforgettable journey”.  On Monday, Team GB broke the news that the star swimmer Adam Peaty is suffering from COVID-19 and would have to bow out of the upcoming events. The suffering felt smaller, but the agony doubled for the 29-year-old. He felt the first sign of the disease just after completing the 100m breaststroke final event at the Paris Olympics, which could have given him a similar stature to Michael Phelps in the event. But after losing the gold, Peaty lost his health, as he felt uneasy. Later, the situation worsened.

An overnight rest on the bed pushed him into the lap of the deadly disease that had disrupted the Olympics last time. But as the human race has stood tall against the pandemic, Adam Peaty repeats the feat. Today on his Instagram story, the five-time Olympic medalist shared a smiling face snap in an exercise pool in Paris. The accompanying caption shows, “Back in the water with the French public today”. He also mentioned that this magic was possible because of “2 days of bed rest”. But what he didn’t mention was his utter will to return to the pool.

Adam Peaty had the option to feature in the men’s 4x200m relay event at the Paris Olympics. But unfortunately, it was the day after his medical report came. However, Peaty’s absence in the relay lineup did not wreak havoc. Rather, the team batted every opponent in the pool to bring home the gold medal. The fallen hero celebrated the victory from his closet by sharing an Instagram story. But significantly, he added five trophies in the story, perhaps counting himself in the relay team. He had his justified reason, as in the last several occasions he has been most regular in the pack, rubbing shoulders with best mates James Hope and Duncan ‘Slam’ Scott. So a comeback from bed seemed to be the most anticipated thing for him. Furthermore, Adam Peaty has a few more reasons to post his hurried comeback.

After a prolonged break suffering mental health issues, Adam Peaty made his comeback this February. And almost no swimming pundit bet on him, to touch Michael Phelps’s record of having three consecutive Olympic golds in the 100m breaststroke. But making those naysayers wrong, Peaty claimed the Olympic qualification first, and then in the final, he just ended his swimming 0.02 seconds later than the champion, Nicolo Martinemghi. But the Commonwealth Games medalist took it as his own experience.

In the post-race conversation, he said, “I’ve continued to fight and find new ways to enjoy something that has broken me to the core and to end up with an Olympic silver through all of that is an absolute blessing. I’m more proud of the man and athlete I am from last night than I have been across my entire career.” He does not want to lose this momentum. Therefore, the upcoming events could be his happy place, where he would prolong the phase he is enjoying. In fact, Adam Peaty will get a chance to appear in the mixed 4x100m medley relay. He has the fame to be the first gold champion in the event, as in the Tokyo Olympics, the event saw the first light. Now that he’s in full health, he will definitely opt to extend his medal collection.
