The USA leads the world in the number of shark attacks each year. With the summer in full swing, people are flocking to beaches all over the country. Although not all of them are dangerous, some of them are populated by apex predators, and sharks are the fiercest of them all.
A serene day at Hilton Head Island took a harrowing turn when a swimmer encountered a shark in the Sea Pines area while swimming. The incident, which occurred around 3:20 p.m. on Friday, has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted swift action by beach personnel. An eyewitness to the whole event narrated the incident to a local news network.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, reported being bitten on the foot while enjoying the sea in waist-deep waters. Quick to respond, the Shore Beach Service personnel came to the swimmer’s aid, assisting him immediately after the terrifying encounter. With an apparent bite wound, the swimmer was rushed to the hospital to receive the necessary medical attention. The man’s condition is not known at this time. Eyewitness Andy Kendeigh, while speaking about the victim, told WJCL 22 that,?“This attack has rattled his family.”
He stated that whistles blew, and a sense of urgency filled the air as the beachgoers cleared the water upon hearing the dreaded cry, “shark, shark!” In a video captured at the scene, lifeguards can be seen rushing to the victim’s aid while the crowd watched in awe and concern. Kendeigh claimed that the first responders took swift action and even applied a tourniquet to the injured man.
As a precautionary measure, Shore Beach Services decided to close off the waters between beach markers 33 and 42 for the remainder of the day. The United States continues to remain a hot spot for shark attacks. There have already been a total of 46 shark bites globally this year, and out of these 46, the US leads the way with 25.

2023 shark attacks in the US
Out of the 25 shark attacks in the US, Florida leads with 13, while Hawaii has 3. The state of New York has reported 5 shark bites so far, while South Carolina had reported 1 as of 17 July. Beaches like Key West, Florida Keys, and New Smyrna Beach continue to record the highest number of shark attacks in the Sunshine State. The most recent of them came just a few days ago when a surfer’s foot was bitten off by a shark around 3 p.m. near New Smyrna Beach. This particular beach is popularly known as the shark bite capital of the world.
