His family announced that he passed away at the age of 70, peacefully surrounded by his wife Helen and their two children, Natasha and Adam. Wilkie’s illustrious career included more than just the awe-inspiring gold medal of 1976. He also won two silver Olympic silver medals, three world titles and broke five world records. He was at one point a dominant force in breaststroke swimming. His first medal was bronze in the 200m at the 1970 Commonwealth Games, as well as winning gold in both the 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley at the 1974 Commonwealth Games. He was also awarded an MBE in 1977 and was voted British Sports Personality of the Year in 1975.
