Does Regan Smith's unique build give her an edge over other Olympic swimmers? What do you think?

Regan Smith recently added to her Olympic medal tally by winning the silver medal in the women’s 100-meter backstroke. She finished with a time of 57.66. This was just behind the gold medalist Australian Kaylee McKeown who finished with an Olympic record 57.33. This meant that Smith’s long awaited wait for an Olympic gold medal still lives on. In 2020, she won two silver medals in 200m butterfly and 4x100m medley and a bronze in 100 m backstroke. Impressively, Smith had made a name for herself in the sport back when she was barely a teenager. It was in 2016 when she was honored with Female Swimmer of the Year in the category of 13-14 years. That year, she got called up to the U.S. National junior team.

She would then go on to set the National long course age group record with the time   of 1:00.26 in the 100M backstroke. Two years later, she became the seventh 15-year-old to complete the same scenario within a minute. She would continue breaking records as she became the Junior World record holder in the 200m backstroke in the semi finals of the 2017 FINA World Championships. She is still aged 22 and has her whole career ahead of her. Already being a four time Olympic medalist at that age is very impressive. Here’s more about her.

Regan Smith’s height is 5ft 7 inches. While this is above the average height for a female in the United States, it is actually below the mean if compared to her fellow female swimmers. The average for them is about 5 ft 9 inches. In fact, her height is one of the lowest in the USA swimming team which traveled to the Paris Olympics. Phoebe Bacon stands at 5 ft 10 inches, while Katharine Berkhoff is 6 ft 1 inch tall. 12-time medalist Katie Ledecky is very tall too standing at 6 ft.

Height is a very advantageous thing for a swimmer to have as it means that they would require fewer strokes to reach their destination. This would mean that having a smaller height is a disadvantage. While that may be true, it has not affected Regan Smith looking at her accolades both in the past and the present.

Smith weighs in at 56 kg which is less than the average of 63.8 kg. But this might be because of her shorter height. Her weight is ideal for a female as tall as her and has barely ever come into play while swimming. She is certainly a very gifted athlete as her achievements at the age of twenty-two shadow a lot of swimmer’s full careers. Thus, her weight should be the least of her concerns.

While her attributes do not stand out much from the average Olympic swimmer, Regan Smith has proved herself as one of the best backstroke swimmers in the world. She won the 200m backstroke gold medal at the World Championships in Gwangju in 2019. The Olympic silver medalist was just 17 at that time, sending a message to the swimming World that she was next up. She has also proved that she can swim in different categories after winning the silver medal in the 200m butterfly.

Her talent and her hard work are what sets her apart from her peers. If she maintains this run, she will retire with numerous honors to her name and one of the greatest to ever do it.
