Is Noe Ponti the new threat to Leon Marchand's dominance in the swimming world?

The 2024 Swimming World Cup has heated up! And amid the showdowns, one particular rivalry has caught the attention of fans. It is the face-off between two of the best, Leon Marchand and Noe Ponti. While both are not leaving an edge to dominate the pool, their thrilling back-and-forth battles have added an extra layer of excitement to the event. And after the Shanghai series, their showdown at the Incheon leg of the series did not disappoint.

Having already set the pace in the previous leg in Shanghai, Marchand and Ponti were expected to face off in dramatic fashion once again. The 22-year-old Frenchman claimed victory in their last race by a razor-thin margin of 0.01 seconds, leaving Ponti hungry for redemption. And as they met again in the pool, the Incheon crowd buzzed with anticipation. They took their marks, ready to go head-to-head once more. However, the beginning of the race saw an unexpected twist.

Italian Olympic medalist Thomas Ceccon overtook Marchand and Ponti and surged ahead, taking the lead for the first half of the showdown. While the two were on their toes to chase Ceccon, Marchand was further pushed back to fifth place. However, Leon made a Leo-like comeback, and with a lightning-fast 14.38 split, he vaulted back into the position he is most accustomed to. But it was not Marchand alone who grabbed the first position. Delivering an impeccable performance, Ponti tied with Marchand for gold in the men’s 100-meter individual medley.

The Swiss swimmer made a spectacular move in the freestyle leg, clocking an impressive 12.44-second split. Although Ponti struggled slightly during the breaststroke to freestyle transition, he managed to catch up to Marchand just in time. And both touched the wall simultaneously in 51.00 seconds. On the other hand, Ceccon, who was leading the race in the beginning, finished very close to the leading two. He emerged third, clocking a time of 51.15 seconds.

Such a win turned out to be especially celebratory for the 23-year-old Swiss swimmer after he faced a setback in the previous race because of an equipment mishap. During the men’s 100m butterfly, his goggles were lopsided. This resulted in water flooding into his eyes, displacing his contacts, and disrupting his vision. But this issue failed to pose a barrier to Ponti’s win, as he still managed to win the gold with sheer determination. And with the competition growing intense between Leon Marchand and Noe Ponti, swimming enthusiasts could not resist sharing their two cents on the fiery rivalry.
