Ever since she made her debut in the 2012 London Olympics, Katie Ledecky grabbed the attention of the swimming immediately. At the age of 15, she broke the record and won the 800 m freestyle in 8:14.63. Till date, she has won 10 Olympic medals and 15 World Championship gold medals which is the most in history for a female swimmer.

Ledecky’s coaches think her to be the best among their pupils. Her childhood coach expressed her views in an interview while talking about the swimmer’s success. Her coaches loved the prodigy for being a quick learner and very obedient. Let’s learn more.

Katie Ledecky’s relationship with her coaches

From the young age of six, Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky emerged to be a star swimmer, contending in the Olympics. Her very first coach was Natalie Pitcher who was 16 by then and loved to train Ledecky. Natalie expressed, “If she wasn’t super famous right now I still think I would look back and think of her the really really intelligent swimmer for her age”. She also added, “You could always just tell her hey fix this fix that tweak that, you just picked it up really quickly so it’s really fun to give her lessons”.

The 7-time Olympic gold medalist also took lessons from Yuri Suguiyama from 2008 to 2012. Talking about her competitive mentality, Yuri stated, “Her goal is always trying to get her hand on the wall before everybody else”. According to Yuri, her larger-than-life attitude kept her on the track to success. As he said, “I think that she has always had a good identity away from the pool and I think that’s one of the reasons why she’s successful”.

Though Katie always saw herself as a high school swimmer, her talent and perseverance made her an Olympian.
