In a recent update, the youngest UNHCR ambassador took to her platform to advocate for the protection of refugees yet again. Standing on a podium before the authorities in power, the swimmer sent a call for action. Her presence and words are presented in hopes of bringing the spotlight to people who resonate with her journey.

On the 13th of December, UNHCR hosted the Refugee Forum. Raising awareness and awarding those who work tirelessly for the cause, framed the agenda for the week’s insightful event. Following along, amid world leaders’ attendance, Yusra Mardini, the star behind Netflix’s ‘The Swimmers’, couldn’t have found a better opportunity to speak her thoughts and announce her partnership. “In the movie, my father says, in the water you are on your own. It’s your fight. But strength and protection along sea routes is a collective effort and responsibility,” Mardini remarked; further stating ways that can extend help to the refugees crossing seas.

The youngster aimed to bring people to sign a pledge to help the sea crossing refugees where thousands lose their lives every year. As a former refugee herself, Yusra has committed her life to standing by people who have lost faith and light. And thus, to work her way through, Yusra Mardini moves alongside her foundation in extending support to the ‘most vulnerable around the world.

The story of millions
After her Tokyo Olympics appearance, Yusra Mardini decided to retire from the sport. Despite calling it her home away from home, the Olympian revealed that it was time to focus on a new chapter. In doing so, she decided to be of help to the millions who share similar stories. “After the Olympics, I realized that it’s not just my story anymore. I realized that my responsibility is to raise awareness and bring hope to millions of refugees around the world and speak for all of those who do not have a voice,” she told Vogue.
