Michael Phelps is one of the greatest Olympians ever across sports, let alone swimming! During the five Summer Olympic games that he has participated in, the American legend has won a record 28 medals, including a whopping 23 gold medals. Additionally, he has also dominated in other big events in the sport.

During his illustrious career, Phelps has often been compared to other fellow athletes. His 2016 Rio Olympics teammate, Caeleb Dressel, once talked about why it was unfair to compare Phelps with himself.

When Caeleb Dressel dismissed comparisons with the great Michael Phelps

During an interview in July 2021, the 26-year-old, opened up about his comparisons to Michael Phelps. Talking about how he felt upon this, Dressel said, “I don’t think it’s fair to Michael. He’s a better swimmer than me. I’m completely fine with saying that. That’s not my goal in the sport, to beat Michael. I’m a very different athlete than Michael. He was at a whole other level.”

He further added, “I’m fine if people want to compare me to him. I have some goals that I would like to accomplish to where I can consider myself to be great, and I don’t have to compare myself to Michael to consider myself to be great.”

Phelps consoled a young Caeleb Dressel after a sensational win

Phelps and Dressel were a part of the United States men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay team, during the 2016 Rio Olympic games. Ryan Held and Nathan Adrian were the other two players on the team. Led by the legendary, Phelps, the United States team went on to defeat France and Australia to clinch the gold medal.

Subsequently, Dressel, who was just 19 years old back then, broke into tears of joy after the sensational victory. Phelps, who was beside him on the podium, consoled his teammate. Michael just said to let it out, let it go, to take my time to enjoy the moment,” Dressel said after the victory. Apart from this victory, Dressel has won another six Olympic gold medals to take his tally to seven Olympic gold medals.
